Halle Berry has signed on to star in Class Act for DreamWorks Pictures, and Doug Atchison has come on board to write and direct the true life tale, reports Variety.

Berry will play Tierney Cahill, a teacher from Reno, Nev., who took a challenge from her sixth-grade students to run for Congress in the 2000 elections on the condition that they would help run her campaign. The single mother ultimately lost her bid to an incumbent, but she ended up winning 35% of the popular vote.

The casting is a unique move for Hollywood, in that Cahill is a white woman. The production felt it was more important to find the right actress to play the role rather than the right white actress.

Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas is producing for the studio with Underground Films. The goal is to start the film in May or June.

I sort of agree with you simply for that fact that most films which are 'based on a true story' or 'inspired by a true story' usually are no where near what factually happened. They're all loaded with hollywood bs to glorify something that never really happened, but was exaggerated. . .almost to the limits of a psuedo-hyperbole.

Small fact though: The Blood Diamond is about the rare pink diamond. . .not generic blood diamonds.

I don't think that Halle Berry is a bad actress, and a lot of the hate is probably motivated by bandwagonism - a la - the same idiots who talk **** about Tom Cruise, etc. . . .; I just think that she doesn't take some of her roles seriously.

Ex: X3. WTF? At least she tried with the 1st 2 (even though her accent was terrible and Angela Bassett was dead-on for Storm in appearance), but the 'RAT' convinced her to nullify the tolerable tone of her speech in favor of a street-talking, blaxploitation, 'that's right mother****er'. . .er, chicken-head? One of my many problems with that film and a lot of others where the people in charge make idiotic decisions that only hurt the franchise.

Anyways, here's a tip kiddies: Actors only project what DIRECTORS tell them to. Sure, some of your A-list talents have leeway (ex: Nicholson, Norton, Kidman, Benning, Depp, Washington), but the script/screenplay in any film is the direct interpretation of the writer, and the final say comes from the Director. (who at times is under heavy pressure from Exec. Producers)

Director: Do this. Change that. Make it work.
Actor/tress: ok.

Get it?

The idea of using Berry for this role was a marketing move; for some reason, people seem to think that marketing a certain type of struggle with a minority will efficaciously sell more tickets. It's a business. Any move is strategically made for money and has little to do with the likes and dislikes of what is beneficial to the story OR TO ITS INTEGRITY. If you don't like it, change hollywood.

I mean from the article, the screenplay hasn't even been written yet. An Oscar winner should know better than to head to casting when no script or even a treatment has been written yet. Even most rookie actors won't take a role in a production without seeing a completed screenplay. Without the script you don't have a sense of the character or their motivations.

That's a core sign the movie is a mess when they're casting without a screenplay. The screenplay is a blueprint for the actors and director to work with. Without it you have nothing.

CINO didn't have a completed script before shooting and we all know how THAT turned out.

She keeps this up Halle will soon have her own section in MST3K.
