'Hamilton' Might Be Headed to the Big Screen

Alexander Hamilton, movie audiences are waiting in the wings for you. Hamilton is a worldwide phenomenon, and people have been wondering when the inevitable movie adaptation would be announced. Well, you might be able to see Hamilton on the big screen very soon, but not as an adaptation. Instead, a recorded version of the hit musical with the original Broadway cast is currently being fought over in Hollywood. Miranda and company filmed a live performance of the play back in 2016, right before Miranda and much of the original cast began to depart the production one by one. At the time, there was no official word about when and where the filmed version of Hamilton would pop up. Now, according to WSJ, “Hollywood studios are currently bidding for the big-screen rights” to the production, and said rights “could sell for more than $50 million, two of the people with knowledge of the deal talks said.” Whomever lands the rights to Hamilton will have to wait a few more years to screen them. The WSJ report states “Sellers are asking that the Hamilton recording not play in theaters, or stream, until 2020 or 2021, some of the people close to the deal talks said, giving the show at least two more years during which it can only be seen on stage.”

Shawn Levy & Greg Berlanti Chosen To Team On Movie Version Of Broadway-Bound ‘Be More Chill’

The auction is being run by WME, which also is separately still brokering a long gestating auction for the rights to theatrically release a movie based on filmed performances of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton, with the original cast. That one still has several big bidders in the mix including Apple, with the parties vying hard in a deal that will surpass $50 million when all is said and done.

I was just waiting for that shoe to drop.

It's not a movie version, but a theater screening of the stage production they filmed two years ago.

I hope they announce a deal soon but it looks like it won't be screened until 2020 no matter who wins the rights.

I hope it happens. I’ve seen a high quality bootleg of the original cast and just recently saw the show live in DC, so I’m good, but there are so many other people who haven’t seen anything of it and deserve to.

Wasn’t trying to brag about seeing the show, by the way. :funny:

Disney making sure they get in on everything.

So is it just showing for one day, like one of those TMC special movie screenings? Or is it opening on October 15th?

A bit surprised that they announced it now when the release is almost two years away.

Finally! Can’t wait to finally see it

I'm really interested in this but it's crazy that they announced it this early.

They spent $75M for the distribution rights to this!?!?!? Disney is out of its friggin' mind.

Do people really go to the theater to watch filmed versions of stage plays? I always see them advertised before I go to see movies but I don't think I'd ever go to one. The thing that makes live theatre so great is that it's live and you're there; it's a whole experience. I just don't think watching a taped performance can capture that magic.

It's much better to be in the room where it happened, the room where it happened.

With this you're actually seeing the original Broadway cast I guess as opposed to a bunch of actors from your area.

Glad it's going to be a filmed stage version rather than shoehorning this into a conventional film format. This is I suspect another stage musical that depends on it being a stage musical to work properly.

Nuts to you, my turn as famous stripper Gypsy Rose Lee got rave reviews in Perverts Weekly.

Yeah, I haven't seen Hamilton (I want to, but the ticket prices are insane) but there are some shows that just don't translate well to film. Rent, IMO, is the best (worst?) example of this. Since that show almost feels like one big song where dialogue is interspersed with a lot of music, trying to move it into the typical musical format with a lot of spoken dialogue just didn't work. Though I also wonder if that was just due to Chris Columbus' awful direction (Side note: Was Chris Columbus worse than Christopher Columbus? Sure he never raped or killed anyone, but he DID make Home Alone 2 and Pixels. YOU DECIDE).

Just because they’re going to milk people into a filmed stage version, doesn’t mean they won’t make an actual movie movie afterward. That’s almost a guarantee.

I really hope, it‘ll come to Disney+ in Europe - otherwise we won‘t have a chance to watch it.
This Musical won‘t work outside the USA

I think it's doing well in England. In Canada, the touring production's selling out like crazy, although Canadians often forget that we were the heels in American history back then.

I've been to a few, but they were more special occasion ones. Saw the Les Mis 25th Anniversary concert via broadcast to one of our local movie theaters, same with Phantom of the Opera 25th Anniversary and the broadcast done of Love Never Dies (which I liked well enough, but I wish it had been the original cast/version with Ramin and Sierra and not the retooled version). I imagine actually being there live may have been even more exciting, but financially that was definitely out of the question. Even with being at the movie theater though, the 25th Anniversaries were still awesome to watch and since the showings at the movie theater were sold out, there were enough people there with you experiencing it that helped the excitement and the enjoyment of it. We clapped, we cheered, we cried. Maybe not the same magic as being there, but still a magic in it's own right.

will this be available only on 3-4th of July or for a longer period?

I'm sure it'll be on Disney+ for several months at least.

I'm just wondering how they're going to handle the very adult stuff that's in the show. They'll certainly be bleeping out the language but there's the entire segment about Hamilton's affair in the second act.

And I would guess the theatrical release isn't happening now, but who knows. I'd love to see it with an audience on a big screen.
