Remember, remember!
The fifth of November,
The Gunpowder treason and plot;
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!
That weird British holiday in which we blow up stuff and burn things like pyromaniacs to remember the failed attempt of 17th century Catholic Al Qaeda to bomb the s*** out the the king and the government.
My favourite event is the Ottery St. Mary highly flammable flaming Tar Barrels race through the streets in the town in Devon which draws 20,000 visitors annually.
In addition to the 18 burning tar barrels, which will be run through the streets from late afternoon until midnight, a giant bonfire will be lit by the River Otter.
Three weeks before November 5, material is collected from the community.
And a Guy Fawkes, prepared by the Young family since 1958, is burnt atop the 35ft pyre.
The spectacle, which has in recent years seen the cost rocket to about £30,000 with the insurance making up the bulk of the premium, is organised by the dedicated Carnival Committee.
