Has Spidey been de-throned as Marvels flagship character

  • Sadly, yes

  • No, Spidey is still King

It's only temporary and only applies to movies.

As soon as RDJ retires from playing Iron Man, Spider-man will back on top.

Spider-man has timeless, iconic qualities like Batman. Iron Man does not.

I don't even think RDJ has to retire for that to happen. Iron Man is Marvel's #1 movie star right now kinda by default, since SM3 was bad and TASM, while good, was nothing too good.

I don't think the quality of Spider Man movies matter to Marvel at all. What matters is that the film character of Spider Man belongs to Sony and not Marvel. Sony gets the profits from a Spider man film while Marvel doesn't.

I'd say suggesting that Spider-man could be a secondary flag ship character would've been laughable before Iron Man stole the show in The Avengers movie.

That says alot about RDJ's charisma and star power.

I agree with both these posts

Marvel doesn't get to decide which character gets to be popular and which doesn't. The GA makes that decision depending on whose films they like the most and for the most part, the GA doesn't care which film is made by which studio.

So what happens if the next Avengers film turns out to be a disaster, or people get tired of Iron Man after another bad solo film?

Nothing dramatic. The majority of people just don't jump ship if they are disappointed in a property or characters that they have loved in the past. They'll just bit** and moan and rip the filmmakers to shreds and demand better next time. And the Avengers roster is pretty fluid with the diversity of characters they can add to the roster to spice things up. Most singular character properties just count on the villians to achieve this.

Iron Man 3 was far from a bad solo film. It did well financially and the GA and critics liked it. It was the internet fan element that foamed at the mouth because of changes applied to a C-list character no one cared about.

The only way the next Avengers film would flop would be if the superhero genre collapsed in on itself, due to over-saturation (which Spielberg envisioned, albeit for blockbusters, of which superheroe cinema is part of.) If the Avengers film fails, then Spider-Man is f***ed, as the box office weariness would close the coffin on the film before it hit the digital projectors.

How would Avengers being a financial flop have any impact on Spider-Man when they're made by different studios?
