everyday ive been hearing news about a reboot of a movie, some maybe good but mostly are remakes of successful franchises
Has it gone too far? should Hollywood stop it or is this just a phase and let it be

Yep, they don't like to rape simply any more. It's become a sex-trafficking industry.

I am not as appalled by all the "rebooting" as I am by the fans clamoring for more "reboots". I think the worst part, particularly when it comes to comic franchises, is that some of these remakes are so close to the original in terms of timeframe, that John Q. Average Moviegoer has no idea it's not a sequel...sometimes even after seeing the new movie.

Yeah, people asking for reboots/remakes is far worse than just projects/ideas/potential reboots/remakes

I touched on this in another thread, but the superhero reboot hysteria is based largely on the 3-act mentality; that is to say, fans think that if they make a 4th movie it'll ruin the franchise, so best to make everything a trilogy & then start over. But since fans almost universally hate every 3rd installment, why aren't they clamoring for a reboot after 2? Hell, some are calling for a reboot before the first one even finishes filming.

I'm surprised ppl who would lick the ground Nolan walks on complain about reboots

No reboots havent gone to far. I mean look at some of the reboots made so far.
BB...everybody happy about that
TIH...generally postive reaction
Punisher WZ...mostly negative reaction, but alot of ppl say its an improvement from the original
Star Trek
Casino Royale
Get Smart....I liked it
The Pink Panther....well that just sucks
Friday the 13th.....I heard that sucked too
Halloween....I have no idea

Now some reboots in production are
Superman after fans b*tched about how bad the last 3 films were
FF after ppl complained how crappy the series is

Its annoying when ppl (fans) suggests reboots like after TDK "because the Nolanverse cant get any better" or after SP3 "because it sucks".

Studios are doing decent with reboots, Fans are the stupid ones about it. And ppl need to learn that remaking/"reimagining" isnt the same as rebooting

I heard they're doing Teen Wolf remake next, now they've gone too ****ing far!!!!

Remake is not the same as a reboot

To explain to younger views I know, about movies not being based off a previous concept, I used a quote my Psychology instructor once said. "Kids like the rhythm simply because its something to dance to, not because it's groovy."

I personally hope that the reboot of the Jonny Quest franchise dies with the announced live action film because it's being marketed towards the tween or middle school demographic, who believe that they've seen the world, and are adults.

It essentially is. You make a new movie & throw out what's been done before. The only real difference lies in whether or not you successfully spawn a franchise.

I dont think so because reboot you basically throw out alot to everything the previous film established (TIH)

Remakes are supposed to stay a little closer to the original movie (The Departed)

Remakes are taking a movie and doing it over again... pretty much, RE-MAKING it.

i thought TIH was a sequel for Hulk, even thought its not but it bridges the two movies

Have reboots gone too far? Not as far as what's already been made. It's what they plan to make but haven't yet. For instance, Cliffhanger. Neal Moritz said and I quote, "Just as they rebooted Star Trek, we're going to do the same with Cliffhanger." WTF? Cliffhanger wasn't a franchise. It was one movie and there's nothing about that one movie that can be "rebooted".

Okay. Which do you consider Star Trek to be? It threw out everything the previous films established and stayed close to the original by saying that the changes were brought about by a time warp.

oh ya ST is a good example

and thats what Im confused about to Cliffhanger had one movie how is it a reboot.
I always thought reboot applied with the idea of a franchise or series in mind and remake being for one film

Reboot, because it did have elements of the old series, but the unvierse that they are in doesnt follow a specific previous story like how remakes do.

Good article on the difference

Generally. I've said this before, but as much as I love Batman Begins, and I do love it, it's the movie that caused reboots to be considered every time a sequel isn't as good as earlier films. EVERY time. I'm sorry Spidey fans, but Spider-Man 3 wasn't so bad that every Spider-Man film from here on out should be set in a new continuity.

I hate remakes of classic films because 1.) You've seen it before & 2.) They're all suckier than the original.

But reboots are fine because they're usually based on a good franchise that should see the light of day again.

okay. Well, either way, I think there is a danger of it going too far. Particularly the way fans keep pushing for it every time they (A) see a movie/sequel they don't like, (B) don't get the particular element from the comic that they were hoping to see, or (C) don't get their dream casting. Not that rebooting guarantees that they'll get what they want. There were people who don't like Batman wearing an all black rubber suit. They rebooted & oh, look-

People complained about a CGI Hulk. They rebooted & oh, look-

And Star Trek did bring about its share of controversy as well. Punisher War ZOne flopped, so fans obviously weren't jumping for joy over that one. So it doesn't necessarily mean that the new approach will be better or closer to the source material or even closer to what you're asking for; it'll just be different. In some ways.

when they announce citizen kane or godfather remakes then yes lol

I don't have a problem with reboots really. Most of them seem to be pretty successful and I've personally enjoyed most of them.

I'm of two minds with remakes, though. Part of me knows damn well that like 99.99% of all remakes are thrown together haphazardly just to make a quick buck on a recognizable title. Also, most of the time I just don't see the point. Why not just rerelease the original? The movie studios get to make money and a new audience gets to enjoy the film. Win win. It seemed to work really well with Alien in 2003. Amirite?

But! on the other hand...if they rerelease a movie like Double Indemnity for example, how many people are actually going to go out and see it? Not many. Probably just people who have already seen it. However if they totally remake and update it, then it will draw in a much more broad crowd. And maybe, just maybe, someone who sees the new version will want to see the original. And there's always the off chance that the new version might actually be good.

In 30 years this decade will be consider the dark ages of cinema. So yes it has gone to far. It is way out there beating the hell out of originality.
