Almost exactly my experience, except the fact that I had the ending spoiled by a friend before I saw the movie.
The first time everything was going by so fast, was so excited that I really didn't spend too much time thinking about things and then was kinda disappointed with some of the directions they went in and the choices they made with the movie.
But I didn't give up hope that there was an amazing movie in there. I realised I just wan't seeing it for what it was, rather I was seeing it through the tinted lens of how I wanted it to be.
The first time none of the emotional beats got me since I was already pulled out of the experience due to knowing what to expect at the end and just focusing on trying to assimilate all I was seeing.
I did really like the movie though, loved Lexenberg, loved Bats, loved Wondy but Supes didn't do it for me and I came away feeling a bit empty.
So I got back, got on these boards, to my good fortune found the "New positivity thread" and started going through it to see other's people's perspectives and to find out what I couldn't see.
Found these amazing articles in that thread plus lots of awesome videos and insights:
After going through all that I finally understood what a masterpiece this movie really was and that my spoiled experience and pre conceived notions were preventing me from truly appreciating it in its full glory.
Watched MOS last night and made a ton of connections between the movies.
Went went for a second viewing today and I was amazed at the change in experience I had. All the emotional beats and connections to MOS hit me like trucks, saw so many things that I didn't see the first time, paid more attention to the music and that made the scenes even better, realised that this IS ACTUALLY FREAKING HAPPENING and that there is this Batman and Superman movie in front of my eyes and in my lifetime and that it is glorious!
Came away with a transformed experience and I can safely say that now Superman is my favorite character with the best arc in the movie!
So to conclude, I totally loved it and I can't wait to see it again for the third time next week!
It truly is a brilliant masterpiece that you have to dive deep into to truly appreciate and all those articles and videos definitely helped me do that.
It wasn't even the lack of the linear story (which I feel is still far more linear than MOS since there are no flashbacks, except for the literal 'Flash back' haha) it was just that I didn't get what I expected.
That problem never happened with MOS since I went in with a clear mind and was looking forward to a new Superman by Snyder and got what I wanted.
I even loved MOS's non-linear narrative and still don't get the argument about people wanting a more linear one.
Ofcourse now that I've seen it twice and gone in with a fresh clean perspective the second time, I managed to appreciate the movie greatly!
Saw it for the third and final time, original language and subtitles. Loved it a bit more without the dub, but my opinion on the film stays the same. Objective rating - 7/10, fanboy rating - 9-10/10.
Pride has nothing to do with it. I saw MoS 3 times because I couldn't get a read on whether I liked it or not at first, so close to the dividing line it was for me. I ultimately settled on not liking it. But with this movie no such question exists in my mind. I definitely did not like it right from the get go. Thus no need to waste any further thought on it.
Watched it for a second time yesterday (all praise be the interwebs).
Still the same movie I saw the first time. The movie only becomes worthwhile once Lex presents Superman with his fight night - albeit the Doomsday tussle can be visually hard to look at times. Let's be honest though, the whole idea of Doomsday is stupid to begin with as Lex could never control him.
The rest of the film is poorly constructed/edited, spending too much time wallowing and trying to pass itself off as having some meaningful insight on Gods/politics than fleshing out two iconic heroes. Jesse Eisenberg's Lex was still a distracting annoyance - a guy who's wacky because the story was written that way, not because of a solid arc.
Watched it 4 times. I see all the things I didn't before. I love it. But I realize why others hate it. I think Snyder killing Zod in MOS left a weird taste with fans. And I also think they put too much into getting the movie out to launch the Justice League. The Superman death could have been played up even more and the fight with Bats could have been handled differently. Bats turn to liking Superman was weird to a lot of people. That just wasn't climactic enough for the big 3 year buildup. This is a movie that should have easily made 1.5 billion. But nobody wants to see it multiple times. And I think it turned off the Superman crowd. I know in each viewing kids cried because of the violence aand the parents left even before the fight. Unless you are a hardcore fan the movie wasn't touching any casual fans. My loving it isn't enough to make it a hit.
Saw it twice. Liked it already but on the second viewing I saw greater cause for criticism in certain scenes but I also enjoyed seeing scenes I loved a second time. I'd give it an 8/10 and my second viewing didn't change that.
Saw it 4 times in total so far. Will see it twice more. One with my mom next week and one final time before July's Ultimate Cut.
My first showing, I walked out of there loving the film and that in itself was a relief to me. Second time I saw more flaws. After seeing it 4 times, I only deducted .5 of a point because I can totally see where the film could have benefited from the pacing aspects of things.
Well, just got back from my 3rd viewing not too long ago. I'm ready to give my final thoughts. I'm sorry...... My thoughts are going to dissapoint a lot of you. This movie..... This movie was pure..... EPICNESS!!!!!
It got better with each viewing. Everyone is welcome to their own opinion of course, I've read a lot of love for this film and a lot of hate! I'm not here to change anyone's mind, if you like it or loved it likes me, I'm happy for you and high five! If you disliked or hated the film I'm sorry.
My final thoughts after seeing it 3 times and weighing in on a lot of negativity I've read I don't see where the hate is coming from at all. The story was great and the pacing was just fine to me, I've read some complaints on pacing and the story.... Again, not trying to change any of your minds but the story and pacing seemed perfectly fine to me. Man I think I got choked up more this viewing than any others. What an emotional journey Superman has had to take between these two films!
Was I the only one that thought Superman looked
totally at peace when he "died". He looked at peace when Lois was with him and holding him, but I guess he should since right before he told Lois this was his planet, his home, and he loved her, before rushing over to give Doomsday the final blow, it was like he finally accepts that no matter what he does people will cheer for him, some people will hate him, good metaphor for the society we live in today
To Ben Affleck, you sir, were absolutely fantastic as batman and Bruce Wayne! YOU ARE THE BATMAN!
Henry Cavill did awesome, it was great seeing him smile as Supes in this film, Henry's performance was great and I believe a step up from MOS.
Gal was great! Love the chemistry between her and Bruce!
Jessie as Lex, ok. First off I can understand why this portrayal of Lex may rub some people the wrong way, but I personally really enjoyed him as lex. Me opinion of course but it's almost like they took the Gene Hackman Lex but made him more cold blooded.
The fight with Bats and Supes! Wow I still smile ear to ear watching Superman throw Batman around like a rag doll when not weakened by Kryptonite. I loved how Supes continued to try to reason with him but Bats was to lost is his own nightmare to see and hear the truth.
The final revaluation the "Martha" name scene that so many seem to dislike. I just don't understand why..... So what he called her Martha instead of mom, it didn't seem awkward to me. Seemed proper, if it was Lois Sup s wouldn't have said "save my girlfriend" again, not trying to change anyone's mind but the scene was beautiful and emotional to me. I loved the exchange between Martha and Batman too lol.
Doomsday, my first viewing I was unsure, by this viewing I now truly love it! He seemed to be in it longer during this viewing and holy crap at the battle with him.
Love the winks and nods to The Dark Knight Returns and Various other comic ref Easter eggs.
My final rating on this film. 8.5 to 9.0 out of 10 yup honest to god that high I'm giving it. I think the critics hate it because it's not Marvel, I say this because I also love Marvel and have enjoyed most of their films outside of a couple and can't grasp where the hate is coming from. I'm not hating on Marvel at all, love them and a lot of their films deserve the praise they get but I can't help but feel a double standard from these critics. But of course that's just my opinion.
Closing thoughts. This film was epic, beautiful, smart..... No genius! Emotional, absolutely amazing!
To Zachary Snyder and the cast of BvS, Thank You! What a epic film and journey this film was and can't wait to see what's next!
