Unless I'm mistaken, hadn't seen a thread for this, and since it did premiere last night, figured one was appropriate.

Was a solid premiere in my opinion. The advisory warning at the beginning- even with the sex stuff- admittedly felt redundant to me. I mean, this is HBO. Wouldn't be this network if there wasn't some sex, violence, and mature content throughout. That said, Zendaya is good in the lead role and while I have no idea if this is how high schoolers party nowadays, it's a different slice of life that, as far as I know, you don't see portrayed that often on television.

Plus, the soundtrack and musical cues often reminded me of Insecure.

I enjoyed it. I'm going to keep watching it. I didn't expect that.

Tonight’s episode was DARK. I’m really interested to see how far down the rabbit hole this show goes. The scenes with Rue and the tattooed face drug dealer and Nate confronting the blond dude were intense as hell.

After tonight's scene in the locker room- as well as other shows- I never want to hear anyone out there in Internet-Land complain about a lack of full frontal male nudity stuff on television.

Well, to be fair, a lot of the criticism comes from shows like Game of Thrones where you had full frontal female nudity in like every episode for a while there and yet hardly any male crotch shots. During the locker room scene last night, I said to my girlfriend, “Wow, is HBO trying to make up for the lack of d*** on Game of Thrones?”

Admittedly, yes, plus while we did get that full frontal shot of fake-Joffrey's manhood, there wasn't anything sexy about it since he was checking for warts.

Damn that second episode was pretty damn dark indeed. Eric Dane's character is really messed up man and now I see how his son became a psychopath as well. I'm actually really enjoying the way this show is exploring sex, drugs and social media so far, because it's not shying away from just how devastating this stuff can be on teens. It's really disturbing IMO, but I respect the fact that HBO is willing to let them go there.

Yeah, some stuff feels over the top but all in all I find this show really captivating and some of the characters like Dane, his son and that tattooed guy are genuinely terrifying.

It was definitely an overly gratuitous sausage party. They made a point of showing every pecker they could.

The show is not as shocking as the first couple of episodes but I guess it's because I've gotten used to the nature of the show. It is sometimes repetitive and sometimes I want to know more about a character than just the most shocking thing they could do. But show is well done, there's not a lot like it, and I find myself always looking forward to the next episode.

I feared for Jules a lot in latest ep. Wonder where the Nate storyline will go from here.

I love this show. The Nate/His Dad/Jules storyline interests me the most.

Yeah Nate is the biggest wildcard on this show. Dude is a straight-up psycho who will probably end up killing someone at some point. I also worry that his dad might end up hurting or killing Jules to cover up his secrets. I thought that after Jules talked to him everything would be okay but now it looks like Nate mentions it to him in the next episode and I could see him going to terrible lengths to cover his tracks.

I’m also trying to figure out if Rue’s narration is intended to have been spoken after all of this happened and is the result of her discovering these secrets, or if they are just using her as an omniscient narrator who doesn’t actually learn a lot of this stuff in the end. Because some of these things are secrets that it doesn’t seem like she’d ever be able to find out about, like Nate’s dad’s self-made porn collection.

As the omniscient, all-knowing, and self-declared "unreliable" narrator, it's also entirely possible that Rue is actually dead.

Oh man. I can't believe I never thought about that. I really hope that isn't what this is leading to. If it is (and please, if anyone has seen the original series this is based on, don't tell me), and
she dies at the end of this season, I don't know that the show will work without her.

Well, couldn't they just do what 13 Reasons Why did- apparently, as I haven't seen the show- and still have a way to have the character be present as part of the series, without being in the literal present?

Yeah, I suppose they could do that. I haven't seen that show either so I'm not sure how it works there exactly but yeah, there are ways to make it work.

Can't wait to see Nate's comeuppance. (Should it ever come.)

I am just worried about everyone else and dreading the possible outcomes.

It already feels horrible that Jules was blackmailed into lying to police.

Yeah. Nate is one evil, pathological SOB. It’s an interesting departure from the typical brodawg quarterback type of high school villain character. At first glance, he comes off like Peter Facinelli’s d-bag character in Can’t Hardly Wait, but gradually you realize that he’s a full blown sociopath.

Yeah Nate is seriously one nasty piece of work, but after that episode where he confronts the blonde dude I only knew it was going to get worse, and just look where we are now. He deserves everything he gets, but will he get it is the real question considering another season has already been renewed.

I just started watching this a few days and it’s been a wild ride.

I’m mostly surprised at how they’ve taken Nate’s words as fact and not think of how to screw him over in some way.

Yeah, I don't think he'll get his comeuppance this season. Especially since he's insulated by a number of factors. With another guy confessing to his crime and Maddie outright telling people that he's innocent, he's definitely getting away with abusing her. And Tyler is never going to admit to what Nate did to him because then he could go down for being a sex offender. And Jules can get screwed the same way if she speaks out against him (though I don't totally know if that's how those laws work; she sent him pictures of herself so I'm not sure that she would actually get in legal trouble for that, but maybe). And his dad will probably do whatever he can to protect him/cover up his misdeeds. So the only way Nate will get any comeuppance is if someone else is able to expose him for what he is or if somebody kills him.
