after reading all the good stuff for my fav characters and discovering new characters and getting to know the comic writers .. like Alan moore and Frank miller ..

so two months ago i did this comic revolution in a forum an arabic one i discovered a frightning fact .. which is .. my people is well found with the manga japanese things .. you know .. shojo shunen and all that stuff

i'm not dissing the mangas .. it's ok manga is cool .. but come on .. i wouldn't compare anything with Watchmen . kingdom come . and all the finest in comics ..

I mostly read superhero books, but I'll see what I can come up with for non-superhero stories I've liked...

Neil Gaiman's Sandman was an epic, dramatic masterpiece. It's the story of Morpheus, the living embodiment of Dreams. There are about 10 paperback collections of the whole series You'd pretty much have to start from the first volume, "Preludes and Nocturnes."

Transmetropolitan (by Warren Ellis, art by Darick Robertson) was a great sociopolitical book. It was about a journalist living in the somewhat distant future, committed to telling the people the truth at all costs. Its later arcs make for interesting reading during an election year, and the main character is just crazy enough for the book to balance its political commentary with humor. Begin with the first volume, "Back on the Street"-- you can also start from the second volume, "Lust for Life."

Ex Machina (written by Brian K. Vaughan, art by Tony Harris) rides the cusp of superhero comics. The main character used to be a superhero, but the book focuses on his time as the mayor of New York City. This book is still running, but there are a few collections out there.Start with volume one, "The First Hundred Days."

Y: The Last Man (also by Brian K. Vaughan, most art by Pia Guerra) was an awesome story of the last man on Earth. That is-- he's the last male on Earth. All of the women are still alive, and one man (with help from a couple of new friends) struggles with his inner demons, true love, and the survival of the human race. This book only ended recently, and there are ten volumes available. Start with the first one, "Unmanned."

Pride of Baghdad (what can I say? I love Brian K. Vaughan) is the true story of a group of lions who escaped from the Baghdad Zoo during the beginning of the war in 2003. The twist is that the story is told from the perspective of the lions. It's beautifully illustrated by Niko Henrichon, and heartbreaking. It's just a single graphic novel, and probably the most economically safe suggestion I've given you.

Fables is an ongoing comic by Bill Willingham. It's great for anyone familiar with European folk/fairy tales, as it shows classic characters like Snow White and the Big Bad Wolf in a whole new light. All fairy tale characters are being chased out of their homelands and into the real world, where they are trying to blend in with the residents of New York City. Imagine the movie "Enchanted," except even the princesses are cynical and jaded due to living for hundred of years in our "mundane" world, and having all married & divorced the same Prince Charming.

In general, I recommend you find as many VERTIGO COMICS as you can, and find which ones you like. Veritgo is DC Comics' more mature line of comics, and very few have anything to do with superheroes.

Jamie McKelvie's Suburban Glamour is an inventive and beautiful. It's a simple story...but the art alone makes it a must buy. if you like faries mixed with teenagers and high school..then SG is for you. And I do highly recommend this series.

Also, check out another project of his, Phonogram [drawn by Mckelvie and written by Kieron Gillen]- again to do with fantasy but given a modern twist- it's all to do with the brilliant ole musical era of Britania. A little hard to understand and requires multiple readings...but awesome nevertheless.

Also, as many have said, you can't go wrong with a bit of Y: The Last Man.

Uncanny X-Men by Chris Claremont
Just an addition to Max's post: make sure the books by Claremont were written during the 1980s. No one really likes Claremont's current work.

Joe Kelly's run on Deadpool, Joe Kelly's run on Superboy, Joe Kelly's run on JLA.

Just an addition to Max's post: make sure the books by Claremont were written during the 1980s. No one really likes Claremont's current work.
Thanks. I forgot to put that.

Don't think I've seen it mentioned so far but one of the best non-superhero books I've read is 100 Bullets.
