Just now I tried to update my BIOS system in my Gateway MT6460 Notebook that uses Windows Vista. I downloaded the driver from Gateway's site and followed the instructions (burned every file to a blank CD and restarted the computer with the CD inside and letting the computer read the files while the machine rebooted), and not a single thing happened. The Gateway tech chat isn't being very helpful either, as my warranty expired for my Notebook and I can't afford to talk with their Pay for Support service they have. To anyone here with a Gateway Notebook computer that uses Windows Vista, have you ever installed BIOS updates, and if so, what's the proper step-by-step to do so? It's kind of important I do this, as my Notebook's fan has been acting up and I was told installing these BIOS updates will help improve it's performance. I'm worried if the fan keeps going on this much longer like this it'll fry my computer inside and destroy it. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help with this.

First off i highly doubt if your fan is on the way out that updating the bios is going to do anything to save it. Sure it might improve the performance of the fan, but only if the fan is in top condition in the first place.

I recently updated my bios (then downgraded it again cause it messed up my USB ports) my motherboard is a Asrock so i went to their site and they had a dos version (from boot) or a windows version. Dont gateway have something like that?
Anyway the windows version just wiped the bios installed the new one and checked it, then rebooted the pc and it was done.
You could always try and move all the files onto a usb stick and change the settings in the bios to read off usb when it boots, and see if that works, would save you wasting cds as well if it doesn't work

I'm just trying to update my BIOS since the Gateway techs I chatted with assured me updating it would make my fan whir less. My fan has been going on much longer than usual. I tried cleaning it out using a compressed air spray can (it was almost empty but I used what little was left). It seemed to perform a little better, but maybe more dust could be blown out of the vents?

Bump, hope to find a quick solution for this, the fan is still acting up for me.

Possibly the file I need to update my BIOS?

I've been told by Gateway techs I've chatted with that I need to update my BIOS and I've tried doing this, but the first method I tried didn't work. The update package I downloaded during the second try says a file called "Winphlash1656.exe" is needed to flash my BIOS to update it, but I'm unsure if this would be the proper download link to try it. Is it? If you have a Gateway MT6460 laptop with Windows Vista 32-bit, please let me know. I'm desperate to update my BIOS to cool my fan down, and the techs so far haven't been very helpful.
