Horror Hereditary (2018)

Horror and slasher films.
Saw it a couple of hours ago. No spoilers--

Pretty dull. That kind of generic and obvious visual palette, pace and attempt-at-creepy atmosphere "smart horror" tends to go for. A nice twist or two, a few good "oh ****" moments, and a couple that were unintentionally funny. Everybody gives good performances. The ending reminded me of a horror short film a friend wrote a few years ago that he ended up folding into something else.

Worth pointing out-- I'm not a horror guy. They rarely, rarely do anything for me. But occasionally when one's getting raves I'll check it out in hopes it clicks with me... This did not. I had the same reaction to The WWitch and The Babadook. So if you liked those, chances are you're all set.

Frankly, I think the scariest part of the whole thing was the ticket price. Not going back to that chain in a hurry.

Liked (didn't love) The VVitch, and loathed The Babadook...so I feel stuck lol.

I love The VVitch and The Babadook, so this should be my jam.

Didn't care for It Follows very much, oddly enough.

The Babadook and The Witch are amazing. I will be seeing this tomorrow night (probably...I could always get caught up at work) and have high hopes for it.

I'll post my full review later but yeah... this was something alright.

My review

This was an interesting yet massively disappointing horror film. Don't believe the hype or the trailers, I think it's meant to throw you off when you see it (Why? I don't know). First and foremost, it has a plot is pretty predictable if you've seen some classic horror movies. You can spot where it's going within the first 20 minutes. The thing that sticks out the most is that there's some awkward humor throughout this. The theater probably laughed more times than they were scared. There's no clear direction in tone and I feel like the director thought it could work. That being said, there are some good moments. There's a lot of creepy and trippy horror elements that got to me. And I thought Toni Collette delivered a fantastic performance. She's easily the highlight of the movie. Overall though, it's a horror movie that will leave you confused more than scared. It's an oddity that doesn't really fully work as the director intended.
6.5/10

Loved It Follows. Not that repeatable though.

For me I loved The Witch and It Follows.... but I thought The Babadook was okay. It's not really worth the hype. As for this movie, I'd put it right below The Babadook.

I dare say this is A24's most audience friendly horror film to date. The people around me were yelping and jumping around. It was so fun. :funny:

Just came back from it, loved it. I agree about some of the awkwardly placed comedic instances but I thought they would seem natural given the context. Most of them were during tense family arguments where certain statements or reactions can come across as funny in real life.

Oh god, you guys just made me realise I stylised The VVitch totally wrong in my post. :funny:

I didn't mind It Follows.

That was a very unsettling movie that I don't get yet. I'm sure a rewatch might be illuminating, but the problem with that is I'm in no rush to rewatch it; it is an emotionally harrowing movie, brutally so. It's a tough sit that I don't want to subject myself to again in a hurry.

Same. Really looking forward to this.

Saw this last night, and as a fan of most things horror-related, I wasn't very impressed. While the acting was really good, the plot didn't make that much sense, especially towards the end when it was piling on the horror theatrics. The movie was also thematically and tonally inconsistent - it started out a lot like James Wan's Conjuring-verse movies, with some similarities to last year's Annabelle Creation in particular (anyone who's seen that movie will know what I'm talking about). But rather than establish a discrete supernatural force/entity early on, like James Wan's movies have usually done, Hereditary felt more like a pyschological drama for about the first two-thirds of the movie, and didn't firmly establish any supernatural forces for most of the runtime - i.e., the people in the movie could've just as easily been passed off as crazy or pyschotic, rather than possessed, and everything still would've fit within the context. It felt more like a creepy/disturbing family drama than a Wan-style "there's an actual demon in this house and we need religious help!" kind of movie.

It was ok for a horror movie, and not terrible, but there were a ton of elements, whether stylistic, thematic, visual, or plot-related, borrowing from other horror movies from the past 10 years or so. Stylistically, it was a lot like James Wan's Conjuring-verse movies. Thematically, it reminded me mostly of The Babadook, Sinister, and The Witch. And the visuals and plot reminded me of two Mike Flanagan movies (Oculus and Ouija: Origin of Evil). For that reason, I think the horror fans who have been watching most of the movies from this decade will probably feel that Hereditary isn't really that original, when it pulls so much from fairly-recent movies.

I definitely think if you're going expecting a genuine supernatural horror movie, as I was, prepare to be a bit disappointed. Otherwise, it is pretty good (and effective) as a creepy/disturbing family drama. Or you might just hate it anyway - on my way out, I heard a guy say to his girlfriend (or could've been his wife) "I hated every minute of it". :funny:

Also, for what was supposed to be a horror movie in general, it felt weirdly disingenuous, and there were more than a few times throughout the movie where it felt like the characters were just crazy or psychotic—sort of like in that the movie wanted to be horror but didn't quite go the right way about it and didn't have the right atmosphere, and the characters came across more as psychotic people than anything else. For example, the ending scene in the treehouse: [blackout]Clearly there was supposed to be a demon there, but something about the scene made it feel like all of the people in there were just plain nuts and not actually possessed by any demons[/blackout]

I liked it for the most part but it was VERY long and I wasnt sure where it was leading or when things would start to pick up. I thought I had been duped lol. The ending reminded me of Paranormal Activity. It was very huh?

Just saw it.

I LOVE Horror movies...even more than superhero films. And...I'm a HUGE fan of the modern trend of (I hate the term) Post Horror, slow burn type films. The Witch...House of the Devil...The Babadook...The Blackcoats Daughter (which is INSANELY overlooked even in Horror circles)...I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House. I like all of that stuff (not a huge fan of It Comes At Night though).

Uh...I'm not a huge fan of this movie. The lead actress was fantastic...the set design (the house, mostly...a spectacular location to shoot this film) was great. I thought the camera work was fantastic with the slow, wide, creepy shots. But...the scares are mostly just unintentionally funny. I couldnt buy into the son (or the actor's performance). I kind of started to lose interest about 4 hours into the film (okay...it was like an hour and a half) and then when the Horror finally kicked in, I just wasnt invested or in any way creeped out. Who knows...maybe I'll sit on this for awhile and ,my thoughts will change (I was not a big fan of It Follows after my first viewing, but later came to the conclusion that it's amazing). Eh....maybe I'll change my mind.

I enjoyed the movie. I'm not over the moon in love with it but I respect it. Well put together. Mostly I appreciated how unpretentious it was. It takes its time and makes an effort to sell the emotions and the drama involved but in its heart of hearts, it's some James Wan level horror fun and it chooses to indulge those elements well. Some really great put together gags. Great use of sound that really played the audience.

8/10.

The movie and its themes (and the title) definitely work on both levels. [BLACKOUT]It ultimately commits to being about cult/demon stuff but the mental health aspects of it shouldn't be ignored. Builds a case for both. [/BLACKOUT]

Toni Colette is great in this but as far as possibly psychotic horror film moms go, I still give the edge to Essie Davis in The Babadook.

I was coming here just to say it was pretentious trash

The was one particular death that was extremely jarring in a great horror movie way, but the rest.... jesus.

Really in what way was this film pretentious? Because the most part it openly revels in some openly pulpy horror tropes and some basic old school gags.

You could hear a pin drop through the whole viewing. I loved this film... never expected that certain character death so soon. Had some awe-struck moments.

Out of the recent horror in the past 5 years that reminds me of Carpenter and so forth; I’d rank them...

It Follows
Hereditary
Creep
The Guest
You’re Next
It Comes At Night
The Quiet Place
Creep 2
The VVitch
IT

Not including Get Out, and I haven’t seen Raw. And honestly Ex Machina, Under The Skin and The One I Love have scarier moments than half of that list.

Ugh, I’m so excited for the new Halloween.

This was good, but I didn't think it was quite as great as the pre-release hype from critics made it out to be. While I LOVED The Witch and It Follows, this plays closer to me like The Babadook. Hereditary is better (and creepier and more shocking) than Babdook, but both seemed a wee bit overhyped to me.

With that said, Hereditary has an amazing sequence that comes out of nowhere, and a superb cast. Toni Collette is phenomenal and there are a few sequences that are quite chilling. However, for all those who say it is a completely original horror movie... go rewatch Rosemary's Baby. They're actually quite similar. The Witch was more original, IMHO.

If I had to rank the best horror in recent years, and there has been a lot of great stuff, it would be in this order:

1. The Witch
2. It Follows
3. Get Out
4. A Quiet Place
5. The Conjuring
6. Hereditary
7. Gerald's Game
8. The Conjuring 2
9. IT
10. The Babadook

If you guys dug this, check out Kill List and A Dark Song.

Like many well made horror films of late, slapped with dat D Cinemascore.

Heh, well so was The Witch and it is one of my favorite movies of this decade that horror fans continue to revisit. So oh well.

Cinemascore is nothing more than a measure of how well a movie matches up to what the wides possible audience expected to get. Which is why Sandler's films rock solid A's most of the time.
