Heroes Con 06: Dc Nation Panel

Didio noted that there is a strong core audience that wants “fun” and lighter themed comics, but by and large, the audience is not big enough to support a book. “People tell me that I hate fun books,” Didio said. “And that’s not true – I hate books that don’t sell.”

I thought the point of the recent "crisis" was to lighten the tone? Though I see the point he's trying to make but just look at the sales of All Star Superman. A fun book done well, hyped and selling by the barrel load.

Off of Morrison's name more than anything else, I'd say. All-Star Batman is also selling by the barrel load, remember?

if they can come up with a book like runaways or spiderman loves mary jane, I'll be all over it:)

I don't like that bull about Dick and Barbara. You set them up for a bigass wedding or something, and all of a sudden it's just gone now and you don't wanna talk about it?

I thought the rest of the interview was fine.

i think devin grayson just shoved the engagment part into the book and just said whatever. and i dont think they planned on marrying dick and barbara, because they had planned to kill off nightwing anyway. so there was really no wedding planned at all.

Ok, but ignoring what became to be a big moment is irresponsible and idiotic.

eh was'nt really that big of a moment. and im sure your use to irresponisbility, since marvel has basically done the same with spiderman.

Yeah, just like Wally taking over the Flash identity wasn't really a big moment or Captain Marvel's death wasn't really a big moment. :o The proposal was definitely played as a major moment in Dick's life in the issue.

WTF does Marvel have to do with anything DC does? Stop crying. Its the ****ing oldest excuse in the book, but Marvel does it too Waaah waaah! It was a big moment, even if you refuse to admit it.

what crying? im just use to it from both companies. they dug themselves into a corner and cant get out of it. im not going to ***** about like you and corp are doing. if they want to ignore it, then thats them. didio doesnt give a damn dick and barbara he's EIC so whatever. blame on bad editorial or whatever, what EIC says, goes. don't like it drop the book. i sure as hell did.

Thanks for the words of wisdom. Here are some more:

Yes, what Dan Didio says, goes. Lame, id rather ***** about it than just eat it up like some peon. He works for us not the other way around.

Well, technically we work for each other. We work to get money to spend on his comics, and he works to make his comics worth buying to us. It's a mutually beneficial relationship. "Symbiosis" is what they call that. That's a fun little fact for you.

Thank god Nightwing is getting a new writer. Still, Chuck Dixon needs to come back. No one will ever understand the character better than him. And this babs thing is bull****. What the hell was the point of that tease anyways? Yeah, they were going to kill him off before, but since they decided against it, you'd think they'd take the whole thing out. I just hope Wolfman doesnt bring back the Kory relationship.

I would say that Marv understands the character just as much, if not more so than Chuck. HE CREATED THE NIGHTWING PERSONA

Another DC panel from HeroesCon.

This caught my eye for obvious reasons:
As one fan complained at how screwed up the Cassandra Cain Batgirl character had become, saying that he felt cheated by her return as a typical one-note bad girl, Didio said that there is still lot of story to be told. “I loved the first arc of Batgirl,” Didio said. “The silent Batgirl, the dangerous Batgirl, the weapon Batgirl. We’re trying to get back to that.”

Didio and Rucka then explained a major push for the Bat-characters in Gotham post Infinite Crisis, that is, that each has to be different than the other. While adopting the mantle of the Bat in Gotham City signals a certain level of commitment, Rucka explained, no one is really happy or completely well-adjusted when they do it. But, Didio added, all of those who do need to be unique in that they are coming to it for their own reasons and from their own direction.
Each Bat-family member must be unique? So this would mean what, exactly? Batman = Batman, Dick = almost-Batman with Batman's old prick attitude in full swing, Babs = the tech geek, Tim = Dick 2.0, and Cassandra = the ******ed stepchild who's treated like **** and beaten regularly. The bit before that about Batgirl is lame, but at least Didio owns up to the fact that he is indeed allowing writers to piss away every positive development in Batgirl's history under his authority. Hooray for impromptu character devolution. :o

how about you stop being a drama queen?

How about you piss off? Like everyone didn't get enough of you whining about how Conner sucks and needs to die throughout every issue of Infinite Crisis. It's my time now. :p

Funny thing is, recently he was complaining how out of character Superboy Prime was written...odd.

Better than the time he was trying to get people to sympathize with Superboy Prime. "He's not evil, he's just angry and confused. He didn't mean to eviscerate people and tear their arms off, they just threw themselves at him! What's he supposed to do, let them bounce off his totally invulnerable body since they're clearly no match for him or fly away like a *****??"

The perspectives for the characters were ticked off as:

Renee Montoya: street level view of the DCU.
Adam Strange: space/cosmic view
Ralph Dibny: magical/spiritual
Black Adam: political/international
Steel: industrial/race (although, on the latter, Rucka noted that the race elements of the John Henry Irons story have been overshadowed a bit)
Booster Gold: popular culture and what it means to be a hero in the DCU.

Anybody else find that odd?

Kinda. But seeing as how he's going to be working with Dr. Fate and Detective Chimp soon and dealing with religious matters...*shrug*

The amount of stuff Newsarama left out of that piece of their DC Nation report is probably going to make me a bit skeptical about how much Newsarama's overall reports leave out.

Didio's and Rucka's comments on Batgirl were actually quite a bit more indepth than what Newsarama would have you believe there.

Didio basically explained that Cassie's father is David Cain, an assassin, and Cassie's mother is Shiva (at which point Rucka shuddered, but more on that in a second), an assassin, and then said, look at where her genes come from. He said that exploring her past is important for her as a character, and basically said that it makes sense for her to have taken this turn as a villain, because of her parents.

When Rucka shuddered at the mention of Shiva, Didio stopped and asked him what was wrong. Rucka is apparently sickened by the kind of character Shiva has been turned into and thinks she has strayed far away from where she started out. He didn't really go into detail.

Something that did reassure me was when Didio stressed the fact that Batwoman was not going to replace Batgirl.

This is great news. Now all I want to know is who it will be written by. Before I was looking forward to his appearence in 52, now this as well.
Yeah, I asked that question. That was me.
