Why don't they just fix the damn problem and fire those workers?

Now that this has hit the internet, GM will now do a whole lot more to compensate this man than just repair his car. They should have just complied, fired the employees, and called it a day.

Man...if I had my way, I would find the man who had final say to not have the car repaired, rip his leg off, beat the hell out of him with it, then shove it up all the way up his ass until his foot comes out of his mouth. What a piece of s***.

I always hear jokes about mechanics fixing one thing but damaging another thing for repeat business and now this confirms it.

You really think that the things that are wrong in the car are there when you bring it in? You wanted an oil change but now need a new transmission, brake pads and steering wheel cover. Just happens it all went wrong...

doesn't surprise me one bit, the only mechanic you can trust is one you're buds with, otherwise they'll try to rob you blind.

Man don't get me started, I have heard horror stories about mechanics that would make your skin crawl. If you are lucky to find a good and honest mechanic hold on to him for dear life.

I have heard everything from mechanics leaving shop rags on the engine and it catching on fire, to mechanics who unhook your battery or clear your check engine light on their diagnostic and not actually do any work but charge you nonetheless, to stuffing a sponge inside to soak up a leak until it is so drenched it comes out all at once, to blah blah blah. Like I said a lot of stories...

I like repair shops that offer free estimates. I've gone to one place , got an estimate , and then drove to another shop and got it repaired for half the price.

A few years ago a Chrysler dealership wanted to charge me over $250 for new front brakes. So I went and bought new brake pads at an auto parts store for $30 and put them on myself. It took me a few hours to do but it felt great when I was done not paying them all that extra.

Thankfully, I never had problems like this with my local Midas or Hyundai dealership.

I've had that happen before. I can't remember the name of the place but remember losing almost an entire paycheck trying to get bew brake pads.
They had me convinced I needes to replace several parts. Then they started on the back. I told them I reached my limit. They even tried to get me to sign up for a credit card.

"Were you going to let this man drive out of here on unsafe tires?"

I tend to reject the idea that all mechanics will try to screw you over.

Some of them, yes. Will they all look for everything wrong with your car that they can and run up a bill? Yes, and most cars that aren't brand spanking new (and some that are) will have plenty wrong with them. That's how those places make money. It's up to the owner to determine how they want their car repaired. And if you want someone else to repair it for you, you will pay a premium for that.

But most of them are fairly straightforward, decent human beings. UNLESS its an insurance claim. If it's an insurance claim, there's this unspoken rule that if the adjuster doesn't catch your shenanigans, they should have to pay for whatever bogus repairs were written.

Most mechanics though, are mostly legit. Like any industry, there are some awful people working in it. That said, I avoid Pep Boys like the plague, and any major chain that I haven't gotten a testimonial from someone about.

My father is a mechanic and its good to have one around. I got ripped off when we took my car to a dealer for some fairly major repair work last year. This year my car started making a funny noise and lo and behold, the part had not been replaced as we were told it had been.

That, and one time a guy at the emission testing center told me he didnt like the way my brakes felt and he told me about a buddy of his that could fix it. I had Dad look at the brakes and he said they were fine.
