High Moon Studios, the company behind War for Cybertron is working on Transformers: Dark of the Moon game. Wow... could this NOT suck with them behind it!?

Despite the less than kind reception for the last Transformers film, the most recent Transformers game, War for Cybertron, was pretty well liked around the office. With that in mind, I was excited to hear from Activision this week that Transformers: War for Cybertron developers High Moon will bring the official game for Transformers: Dark of the Moon to Xbox 360 and PS3 this summer.

We had a chance to speak briefly with High Moon about the upcoming game. Game Director Sean Miller explained why War for Cybertron fans will be comfortable with Dark of the Moon."In terms of similarities, we think people will be excited to know that we're sticking with a similar control and gameplay scheme from War for Cybertron," Miller said. "We want you to be able to play in whichever (transformation) mode you want - you're never without your weapons, but you've got choices."

Transformers: Dark of the Moon leads in to the events of the movie and takes players through High Moon's versions of Earth-based locations like Siberia and Detroit. Dark of the Moon also introduces a new transformation mode called Stealth Force, though the jury's out on how sneaky you can be with it - it looks a little heavy on the force, if you know what I mean.

Online multiplayer is also making a return, though High Moon is being cagey about announcing particular modes outside of War for Cybertron's slick competitive component. There was no mention of the Escalation mode, which is similar to Gears of War's Horde mode, or online co-operative play, but Activision mentioned that more details will be available in the coming months. Fans will be excited to hear that online play will feature actual named Transformers this time around, rather than palette swapped look-alikes.

When asked about the apparently short turnaround time between the release of War for Cybertron and Dark of the Moon, Miller assured me that the latter began development before War for Cybertron's ship date last June (just after E3 2010). Also, since the game plays the part of prologue to the film, it's given High Moon the ability to design around the game's needs rather than rigidly adhering to a movie script.

After the poorly reviewed previous film adaptations, Miller said that Activision chose High Moon for the Dark of the Moon game "because of our love of Transformers - we have a great relationship with Hasbro and really love the universe."

We'll have more details on the Transformers: Dark of the Moon game in the coming months. The teaser trailer for Dark of the Moon will debut at tomorrow's Toy Fare, but check back at IGN Saturday afternoon for the exclusive online reveal of the teaser.

The Wolverine game didnt suck. I mean it wasnt great but it didnt suck.

But i agree, High Moon knows how to handle Transformers. I mean I hated War for Cybertron, but thats only because i hate the old 80's look of the Transformers. So with their gameplay, behind Michael Bays far superior designs, i think this could be a deff buy.

You may be the only person that has ever said "Michael Bay's far superior designs.." lol. I mean, I like Bay's Autobot designs but I find his Decepticon designs to be.... um.... less than good. Shockwave does look great though.

I always forget about Wolverine. It was good, I agree. It was actually better than the movie....

I'm looking forward to this, I admit, I'm a sucker for a movie tie-in (especially if it's TF related) game. But with High Moon developing it and being a prequel, it might be good.

Haha yea i am, but i wasnt introduced to Transformers until the films so Bays designs were my first exposure to them, and i happen to like them better than the old 80's designs.

I actually had a lot of fun with Revenge of the Fallen's multiplayer. War for Cybertron played much better than that so this might not be a bad thing.

I respect the 80's cartoon... but I'm glad the comics expanded on those designs and made them less blocky.

That's why I really like WfC designs... which are more "The War Within" than the 80's design.

I'm happy that High Moon is behind this. We'll see how the game turns out even so it could not be more worse than the previous two games.

Michael Bay did pretty good with the Autobots, but those Decepticons came across as looking more like insects, well at least some of them. There may be hope for this movie tie in, but remember, War for Cybertron was an original game meaning they ample time to develop it, you know alot of movie games have to meet the release date of the actual film. I'm hoping for the best though

^They said they started working on this game before WfC shipped. So, they've had quite some time to work on it.

Sounds like the same scenario as the X-Men Origins: Wolverine game, supposedly the developers were already far along before the movie went into production, they made a few changes to tie it to the film. Quite honestly, I found that game LEAGUES more entertaining than the actual film itself.

Yup, me too.

Plus this game will lead up to the events of DotM... so, it won't be held back by the films script.

The Punisher 2005 tie in game was awesome too.... and Spider-Man 2

Was the 2005 Punisher game a tie in? I didn't think it was. I suppose so since Tim Jane voiced him.

Yeah, and it came out in conjuction with the film, like X2: Wolverines Revenge.

You sure? IGN states the game didnt come out until January of 05 but the film came out April of 2004.

But there are a few good movie tie in, like we mentioned Wolverine and then the Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay might be the all time best.

They were tied in, just seperated for financial reasons. I believe there was a mobile game by the same people that came out in conjunction with the film, but Tom Jane was Punisher in the game and they used the movie designs and many similar characters. It was like the superman Returns game that came out months apart from the film.

Oh yea, thats true, youre right. One of the levels in that game was straight from the movie, where you fought the russian, yea i forgot about that.

So you think that movie tie ins have allways been bad?
What about Star wars, king kong, spider-man 2 and expecially the chronicles of riddick, the the game was even better than the movie and was considered game of the year.

What Star Wars movie based game was good? The Super Nintendo ones? You don't count the the Rogue Squadron games do you? Sure, Star Wars games based in the Universe like that, or Jedi Knight, ect are great... but the games based on the movies kind of stink... and yes, I know that the Episode III game has a loyal following... but I'd never call that game good, lol. :p

I hated King Kong and I thought the Spider-Man 2 game was "just ok." I'd still take the old school Activision PSX games over it.

As for Riddick, I thought it was highly over rated. Decent, but meh... Then again I just played the updated version on PS3.

Just my opinion of course.

Bottom line is this: Aside from a few stragglers here and there... once every few years or so... movie games suck. It's a fact. The ones that don't aren't really based on the movie... maybe loosely.

This is a "movieverse" based game being developed by a developer that already proved that they know their Transformers and could easily be the best movie tie in game of all time.

... I kind of want to go get 2005 Punisher again. Is it BC on the 360?

It sure is Benstamania, and worth every second. I want a sequel to THAT bad boy.

Also, I think you should make the distinction between movie tie in games and games based on movies. The ones that suck are specifically the ones rushed to release at the same time as the film. There have been plenty of good games based on films that have come out AAAAAAGES after the film. Like The Warriors for instance? That was awesome.

Michael Bay's designs for the Transformers suck. I like how they weren't as blocky as the dull G1 designs, but they were quite fugly. They were a little too mechanical. They should have had a middle ground.

They are machines, they need to seem mechanical. They actually looked like something that could shift into another form. Thats why they're far superior than anything else prior.
