I got a job! I graduated from my surgical tech program over a year ago and JUST got hired at a local surgery center on Wednesday. I really lucked into it because a family member of mine just had a procedure done there and told her nurse I was a tech. Turned out they had just lost one and were looking. I was basically offered the job from the start of the interview.

Anyway, it's a small facility and I'm mostly gonna be handling eye cases. Cataract removals specifically, which I'm grateful for because they're easy, in-and-out procedures. I'm nervous as hell since I haven't scrubbed in over a year but damn excited to be gettin' going'. I was hoping for a plastic surgery center...but this works.:oldrazz:

Congratulations. What the hell is a surgical tech?

ST's set up the OR and hand the instruments to the surgeon during the surgery. When you see a doctor on TV say "scalpel!" that's a tech's hand handing it to him.

Congratulations! Hope you enjoy your new position.

Congratulations Poetic! That's great news!

Congrats Poetic, sounds like you have a great opportunity. Hope you can stomach eye surgery better than I can.

Congrats you hella cool dude. How long was your surgical tech school?

Make sure you repeat each tool as you hand it over.

"Scalpel?"
"Scalpel"

Congrats Poetic. My mother is a surgical tech, so I'm already rooting for ya.

Hm, I never knew that job existed. I need to rethink my career path...

Jack Shepard is that you?

Haha, kidding! Congrats!

I was going to take classes to be a surgical assistant but those plans fell through this year. Oh well.

13 months, 4 of them in a hospital. $26+G's in the red :(

They're not that bad. I have a bigger problems with the smells of surgeries than the visuals. I'd rather be looking at an open chest than smelling a dead toe. Eye surgery doesn't really have either problem though.

Awesome

And thanks for the congrats everyone. So any thoughts on what I should use my first paycheck on? Everyone seems to be giving me financial advice since this is my first real job that can support me.

Umm... I'm sure you're going to have to pay back that 24+Gs somehow.

Well other than that (I'm already paying $300 a month going towards that blackhole).

Eye surgeries bother me because of the way eyes are squishier and stretchier than I expect them to be. Of course, the only eye surgeries I've assisted with were enucleations, so that could be why.

Have you ever seen anybody get corneal correction (keratoconus) surgery? I'm thinking of having Intacs implanted to correct my vision. Just throwing that out there for info if you have any.

Take a little bit of it, and open an account with Edward Jones. It doesn't even have to be a big amount. $50 will be enough. Just stash a little bit at a time to let grow over the years. If you don't want to go that route, then buy yourself a water filter. They're only around $30, and it'll save a ton of money in the future.

No info on that, sorry. Phaco's are pretty much the extent of my eye work.

Well as a tech, I don't actually touch the eye. I pretty much just keep them wet and hand any instruments. But yeah, seeing that lid stretched wipe open and a blade going into it, blah.

Yeah, saving is the number 1 one thing I've been hearing from people. Good idea on the water filter. I'm not sure how efficient my Brita is anymore...

I'm not talking about the eyelid. I'm taking about the eyeBALL stretching. :csad:
