Horns

I just finished this novel... and... well... I was disappointed.

Joe Hill is a great writer, without a doubt. But this was a frustrating book to get through. Essentially, if the script adapts this novel 100%, it'll be a very irritating experience.

Ig (Daniel Radcliffe) has the horns for maybe the first 50 pages of the novel, and then the next 100 pages are a flashback to things unrelated to the horns... then the last third is basically from the perspective of the main antagonist, and further goes back to flashbacks.

If they can stretch the first 50 pages of the novel into a full-length film, I might be excited. But I'm terribly worried that this will get bad reviews for essentially not getting to the point. It's got an AWESOME set-up and the first third of the book is fantastic, but then it spirals out of interest and doesn't keep its promise. We're looking at the first 30 minutes of the film actually following the plot we all know.

My main problem with the flashbacks is after a point, they aren't even showing anything new.

^ Agreed.

And another thing that was INSANELY irritating was the hints that

maybe the horns were more of a metaphor instead of being a real supernatural occurrence taking place. In other words, there were no horns.

Other people seem to not notice them at all. Although some do.

It almost feels like the horns are an emotional metaphor for what he's going through, as something devastating, and they're not really there.

If that's the case, it makes the few parts I really loved essentially meaningless. :csad:

The horns were definitely real it was just part of their power that the people under their influence couldn't see them.

I mean the whole snake thing is a pretty major part of the endgame.

The teaser trailer and poster have been unveiled for Alexandre Aja’s of Joe Hill's novel "Horns" which hits cinemas and VOD at Halloween. This looks like all kinds of fun! Can't wait!

THe marketing is messing up with not being clear with the tone. One trailer is somber, the next is a funnier, and then this one is really dark.

They are just covering their bases. The average moviegoer won't see all these trailers. They will just see one. Some will see the funny trailer. Some will see this one. Some will see the somber one. The studio is hoping to appeal to a wide range of viewers and get butts in theater seats. Also this recent trailer is a UK trailer. It having a different tone from a US trailer isn't unusual. International and domestic trailers tend to take a different approach to selling a film.

I just finished this book not fifteen minutes ago. It was great! There were funny bits and really touching bits as well.

In my opinion, it'd be hard to film a straight and direct adaptation of the novel, as is. I have a feeling the movie will be rife with flashbacks, sprinkled in at just the right time to keep the plot shrouded in mystery.

For instance...
I could see the movie opening with the scenes in the past where Ig almost drowns and Lee saves him, or I could see it being a flashback whenever Ig first goes to see Lee in the present time. We shall see.

Was just about to post that I've seen it.

It's ok. Radcliffe gives a good performance and the story is pretty interesting. But the tone was too uneven and the movie went on too long

6/10

Do you feel that it is worth the $10 to rent or $15 to own or would you say wait for it to hit theaters and see it during a bargain time?

I'd say wait for HBO or Netflix in all honesty

But if you want to see it pronto, then go to the theater and see it for like 5 or 6 bucks. It's not worth much more than that

Ight. I'll wait for the bargain price ($5.75) at my local Carmike.

I thought this was really damn good! Not as good as the book but still pretty great. It's a good story and Radcliffe just kills it. I really REALLY liked it but it left some stuff from the book out I wish they'd have left in.

I thought it was really good. Surprised to see it getting hate already. It really tried something different and while it could have really gone somewhere interesting more like the novel, it was still awesome. It wasnt like, Odd Thomas, even though that still got the feels flowing.

i dont see much hate on this. Response is kind of mixed but I dont see many people calling it terrible or whatever

I can't see this being the type of movie anyone would hate - it just doesn't stir up that level of emotion - but certainly there are some flaws with it (also, and this isn't directed at Maximus specifically, but we really have to get away from using the word "hate" for whenever someone simply doesn't like something or is ambivalent about it at worst).

Not bad by any means, and like everyone is saying Daniel Radcliffe was really good in the role - nailed his accent, I thought - but definitely some iffy choices, perhaps a few wasted characters and motivations that don't quite seem fully formed. These kinds of stories - where you're supposed to sort of just understand why a person would be madly in love with another person without really getting to see the actual relationship play out - can always be tricky to execute.

Typically, a film will just throw in a pretty actress as shorthand for "she's awesome" since good lucks equal = winning personality in films, so I do appreciate that they did at least try to flesh the female lead's character out through flashback, but in the end I just never really cared about their relationship or became invested in it. I'd say worth a rental, I suppose.

Hate, to me, is just any negative reaction. I dunno, it's just an expression. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie though. I felt for Ig and what he was going through, that feeling of isolation and feeling like everyone around you hates you. That outsider type feeling, he pulled it off great. He did annoy me with the big restaurant argument scene though

But see, it's really not :) Hate's the strongest negative emotion you can feel, so to lump every opinion short of "I loved it" into the same category doesn't leave much middle-ground. I totally get that it's a figure of speech, I'm part of the generation to first start using it regularly, and that's my point: it's over-used to death now. We've reached peak saturation. Nothing wrong with growing our collective vocabs a bit.

Totally agree on the argument scene as far as Ig being a d**k, but I also think that's what made it probably the most realistic. These characters are sill young and Ig's never been in any other relationship, so a "mature" breakup is probably not in the cards for a kid (twenty-something? How old was Ig?) who's about to propose to the person he believes is his soul mate. Totally reminded me of me 10-12 years ago.

I get what you're saying. Anyways, I know in the book Ig is supposed to be 26

26? Holy hell, that is maybe a tad too old to react that way. I was thinking 20-22 at most. Taking back my quasi-defense of Ig in that scene. D**k move all the way.

Maybe Im a weirdo, but I dont think Ig was acting like a d**k in that scene
