How do I make a GIF?

I've used the search button but nothing came up, this probably is thread #100000001. Anyway, I want to make some gifs but with what software can I do that best. And with what program can I cut up the film (my computer is running slow if I have to load the entire film into a program)?

Use Virtual Dub to edit video sequences.

Then I use Adobe Image Ready to make the gif itself.

If you're making your own, you can make each frame as a layer in Photoshop or something and save it as an animated gif. If you want to make it from a video clip, you can probably do the Photoshop thing with screenshots, though I'm sure there's an easier way.
