Okay, this may sound stupid, but its really bugged me for a while. Lex Luthor is one of the most classic and iconic comic book villains of all time, if not THE most. But it seems like no one knows for sure whether or not his last name is pronounced Lew-ther (with an "e" sound at the end, like Martin Luther, Luther Vandross, etc.) or Lew-thor (with the end being an "o" sound, like Thor). It gets really confusing when you watch Superman The Movie and you here Lex refer to himself as Lew-ther and Superman refer to him as Lew-thor. Personally, I think Lew-thorr sounds cooler and more unique... plus I would think that if he creaters wanted his name to be pronounced Lew-ther, then they would have just spelled it the right way (Luther). What do you think?

Discuss.

I always pronounced it Lew-thor. I just found the name was to be pronounced as regally as the character it names, and substituted accordingly.

Good question. I use both, and not sure which one more often. Although I'd say I prefer Lew-Thor. You're right, it does sound cooler.

In my english accent, in normal speech, it's Luth-er. When I'm putting on Superman's voice, it's Luth-or.

Luth-or for me, generally. Although it usually comes out a cross between Luth-or and Luth-er. I never pronounce it like Martin Luther though, cause that'd be just plain weird.

It is either way, same name. It is mostly Lex Lu-thor. Lex Luth-er was started from Superman: The Movie. Lex Lu-thor was pronounced from the Kirk Ayln serials from the 40s. That is the history of the name Luthor. But it is either way really but it is mostly - Lu-thor.

Superman pronounced it that way. But at least Otis stuck with the original.

"Coming, Mr. LuthOR!" :D

True, True, Very True..........:D

That is totally right.......Otis did say Mr. Lu-thor.

Loo-ther. The correct pronunciation would be Lu-THOR. said exactly how it is spelled.

yep... that film gives the impression that "Luth-er" was the correct pronunciation, and "Luth-OR" was Lex's preferred pronunciation, possibly because of the ever-high opinion he has of himself! ;)

I intend to say Loo-thor, but saying it at a normal, quick, conversational speed leaves it as Loo-ther anyway.

Exactly. His name is "lewth-OR" when you talk TO him, but when you talk about him, it's just "luther"

Loo Thor

It's just impossible to say that very fast ten times properly. But yeah, that's how I usually pronounce the name.
