How do you want the transformation from Banner to Hulk, to look?

It doesn't have to painful but Banner should be fighting to resist it. Turning into the hulk for him isn't a ride at Disney World. He knows if he lets go people will get hurt.

Also the Bill Bixby white eyes and crazed expression revealed that the transformation wasn't just physical it was also psychological.

Rapid cell growth can be painful. Every cell in Banners body is exploding with energy and multiplying at an alarming rate. If your bones, muscles, and skin suddenly began stretching and expanding in less than 1 minute I think you would be in a world of hurt.

In your post it came off like you were saying the Hulk is 'release of the tension' like a 'relief' to it, when in fact he IS the Tension.

But if we're saying the same thing, then
well there is a slight difference but in order to explain i will have to go against something i mentioned earlier and use another form of media as a reference

in the second series of the animated 90s cartoon when at any point banner could turn into either the grey or green hulk, before transformation, you'd see an internal turmoil scene of both the hulks in battle with one gaining a slight victory and gaining the ability to be the one banner transformed into.

at this moment, within the internal turmoil, whoever one the tiny bout would show some signs of anticipation and freedom from being able to now be released.

a tame beast gets some satisfaction from now being out and completely wild,

so although not scene from bruce, this emotion i feel needs to be somewhat captured by the hulk while also maintaining the essence of being truelly mad as well...

i'll try and see if i can find a clip of what i'm talking about.

The main thing I wanna' see in the transformation is seeing his eyes turn green first, I love that.:woot:

..pupils green; cornea's bloodshot red!

HAS TO BE! with a vicious roar following... Then an eerily calm look of determination to follow. Very intense shot giving that "OH SH#T, it's about to go down" feel...

It's really important that when Banner becomes Hulk, we see Banners face reflected in the Hulks face. Banner is not completely "lost" when he transforms into Hulk. It needs to be conveyed that he is trapped in the rage, that is the Hulk. This was missing in Ang's version and it destroyed the most fundamental, core aspect of the Hulk story. For some funny reason, as a child watching the TV show, I saw Bill Bixby in Lou's Hulk and it was captivating.

Yes. But that aside: don't you agree. I mean the technology will be available to do this now.

Great thread!!! :hulk:

The transformations should be suspensefull and intense. They should make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. They should emphasize that Banner is helpless despite his struggle to fight the transformation. When Banner is transforming you should get not only excited but a little scared. When Bill Bixby's eyes got white-green and he had that crazed expression on his face it was a spectacle to behold. You got that "awww s--t, it's about to go down" feeling.

The Hulk tv series handled transformation much better than Ang Lee and it was done over 40 years ago. :o
Over 40 years ago? Someone needs a math lesson...

Do I need to monitor this thread? You all have got it all wrong.

Betty noticing Bruce is upset - like a concerned wife - should become a ditz and say, "Now, where did I put that pump?" She leaves the room for a moment to find the bicycle air pump, while Bruce feverishly tries to change into the Hulk, saying to himself in a mirror, "I think I can, I think I can..."

Betty returns with the air pump and sighs, putting a hand on her hip and shaking her head, "You're going to have to do better than that," seeing that Bruce is irregular in shape and half-green. "Now, bend over."

Bruce helps her inflate himself to a formidable size. "How do I look?" he says. "Not so puny anymore," she replies. "Go get 'em tiger!"

And he skips, rather than hops, away.

Note: During the scene when Bruce inflates to Hulk, they should slowly zoom in on his face while fading into a dreamlike state (bliss for Hulk) as "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" plays in the background.

Jokes aside, I like all of your ideas and I have no idea as to whether he should feel pain or not. If the illustrator or whomever is most responsible for Hulk's appearance even has half the idea that you all seem to have, I think we'll be in good shape (or at least better shape than before).

Huh!?! The Hulk is another persona of Banner so he takes on his own characteristics that expresses the rage and frustration in him. He isn't trapped, he's free of having the anger trapped within himself! If you see Banners face then you have Bannerhulk not HULK.

I take your point; but if the visual connection is lost completely, I think the impact of the transformation is less. Don't get me wrong. There would need to be a considerable distortion of his face. When the Hulk calms down and we see the close up of his face on screen and he has that confussed "what just happened?" look on his face; I think we should clearly see that the Hulk is Banner.

"The Hulk possesses the capacity for nearly limitless physical strength, making him perhaps the strongest mortal being to ever walk the Earth. The gamma radiation that mutated the Hulk's body fortified his cellular structure and added, from some as yet unknown source, over 800 pounds of bone marrow and tissue to his body."

"The process by which Banner transforms into the Hulk has a chemical catalyst, adrenaline. As in normal humans, Banner's adrenal medulla secrets large amounts of adrenaline in times of fear, range, or stress, which hormonally stimulates the heartbeat rate, raises blood-sugar levels, and inhibits sensations of fatigue. Whereas this secretion simply heightens normal physical abilities in normal human beings, in Banner's case it triggers the complex chemical/extra-physical process that transforms him into the Hulk. The total transformation took from 25 seconds to as long as 5 minutes, depending on the initial adrenaline surge which is determined by the original, external stimulus. Soon after the transformation, the amount of adrenaline in the Hulk would return to more normal, reduced levels."

Gainning 800 pounds in less than 5 minutes.....HURTS!

Take a good look at this. This is a GREAT example of what i want the HULK's transformation to look like. If your a child of the 80's like i, you'll know this is a clip from the short live series 'Manimal'-which i loved btw.

I want the transformation to be somewher along these linest, but maybe with a bit more of the horror/pain element added to it. Check it out:

I would love to hear Louis say something about the transformation, and if he actually liked the Ang Lee version of the change.

What about the possibility of a "meatloaf" comment, ala' American Werewolf In London. You know, the "sorry I called you a meatloaf, Jack" part. Basically the last thing Banner says before he's gone completely, maybe something like "I really hate this part" as his skin starts tearing and bones start breaking & reforming.

Yeah, sort of like, a chick having the ability to make herself a virgin over and over again, every time after having sex. Its not worth the hassel.

I saw the movie, "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," a few months after "The Hulk." While I didn't care too much for the flick, I always thought the underwater jeckyll/hyde transformation was along the lines of what the Hulk transformation should have been. But please...no "Werewolves of London" or "Manimal" bulging bladders.

I like the eye idea as a nod to the TV series. I'd like to see the pain & details of the transformation for the first change, then just quickie shots for the rest of the film. I like the idea of the signature scream/roar like Afan suggested. I can imagine a scene where off in the distance you here the familiar scream/roar and you know what's coming!
