How many here are old enough to remember reaction about Michael Keaton as Batman?

I admit, I'm not a Routh fan. I just want to get that out of the way first. Call me a hater, a troll, whatever you want, but I thought I'd bring up a previous example for an actor in a similar situation.

I was a kid when Batman was released but I used to read Wizard Magazine at the time so I had my full blown comic book nerd stage going. I was a huge fan of Batman, and when the news was released about Michael Keaton as Batman, I was up in arms! I was shocked, I was hurt, I was frustrated that Tim Burton picked someone who was even skinnier than the corny Adam West version. It was even worse because up until then Michael Keaton was primarily known as a comedian.

Then.... I saw the first Batman trailer. OMG! Blown away! The Bat outfit looked cool as hell, Jack Nichsolson as the Joker was awesome, and they even showed the famous Batwing scene. The movie had me at hello. I knew I was going to like it.

I think a lot of fans feel the same way about Routh. I'm wondering if you changed your opinion the first time you saw a trailer, maybe were a little less harsh and thought it might work but you'd have to see the movie, or did it only confirm your thoughts on Routh as Superman?

The F/X blew me away, but I did not have the same reaction with Routh as Supes as I did with Keaton as Batman. I thought the movie could be good, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I was going to look at this guy the entire movie trying to convince myself that he is actually Superman.

We'll see what happens. Some good reviews are coming in so far, but most of them are from the types that are paid off. Hopefully, it works as smoothly as James Bond. There have been some good actors, and some good films, no one will ever replace Sean Connery (i.e. Christopher Reeve in this situation), but we've learned to accept some of the new actors and continue to enjoy the franchise. Hopefully, Routh ends up as the Roger Moore or Pierce Brosnan of Superman, and not the George Lazenby. ;)

I stopped right here. It is AMAZING what the ones like you will say

Paid off. Hmmmm. I really wanted to say something but its not even worth it so here you go. When I see Routh, i see SUPERMAN!! He embodies him, and thats from what little bit I have seen. So unless he goes around killing babies and his lines in this movie then, HE is the new face of Superman. We arent trying to replace Reeve here people. He is still Superman, and always will be. But its time to move on.

Hell I remember when Superman The Movie came out.:)

Most of the stuff I see quoted or linked are AintitCool.Com type sites. Those types of reviewers get paid off all the time. It's not fanboy hate, it's the reality of the movie business.

i'm sure if Routh had the powers, he'd gladly take on the role of a real life Superman...

...that's how much Routh seems like Superman to me.

so if the reviews start pooring in and most of them end up positive, does that mean all those reviews will be paid off also? hehe

aintitcoolnews.com is notorious for blasting films. they TRUELY speak their minds (however warped they may be) over there...

I remember Harry Knowles getting in trouble for receiving invites to movie studio sets and then giving the movies positive spin. If you watch the HBO series, Entourage, I think the nerdy internet reviewer in season two who threatens to take down the career of Vincent Chase (the main actor in the series) if he isn't shown more respect is based on Harry Knowles and guys like him in cyberspace.

To be honest, and I know I will sound like a bad or "girly" Superman fan, but I wasn't absolutely sold on Routh or Bosworth until I saw them in a trailer together.

I'm not saying anyone can play Superman, but I felt some emotional depth from the little bit I saw in the tv spot featuring them (though it was to the most corniest and gawd awful music I ever heard:O ).

Whenever I see Reeve as Superman I get a chill...doesn't matter what he's doing. He's just so masterful in that role. I don't think BR is going to hit me with the same presence...I don't know...maybe he will. The reviews say he will, but he has a lot to live up to since he is going after Reeve.

I'm trying to be open minded about it all, but the I know the deciding factor for Routh's performance (for me) is going to be his chemistry with Kate. He can fly right, look right in the tights, and do it great...but it's going to be that element that makes it or breaks it. So far, it's looking good.

So to answer your question in a backwards, round-about way, yes the trailers did change a lot of my negative opinions, especially about the casting.

charl you need to see the stuff in the Look Up To The Sky Documentary. They showed some great Lois & Clark moments

Good deal, Movies. Le sigh...I got twenty more minutes to go before it starts:O

I think when Keaton was cast I was 1 or 2, so still in the semi-goo goo/gaa gaa phase. ;)

alright...so you're saying these guys are writing good reviews JUST because they're paid off? there's no chance that these guys could be paid off AND think the movie was actually good?

you shot yourself in the foot with that one line. Only a cynic believes that everything he disagrees with is wrong.
I was in high school when Batman came out in 1989. Some of the complaints include Keaton being too short, too skinny, he was balding, he didn't look anything like Bruce Wayne, The costume was too thick, they changed the costume too much, the changed the batmobile, It wasn't like the TV series.
Sound familiar?

When I found out Keaton was cast as Batman, I cried. I cried because I was probably two years old and that's what two years olds tend to do.

Dont feel bad i was only 6. The joker gave me nightmares but i still watched it 3 times a day forever and ever:)

I was one when that was on so I can't say I remember the show but I was ten when STM came out and it was great. :)

Dark Horizens, Latino Review, CanMag, IESB...all of them unrelated to AintitcoolNews and all of them frequently legit websites who are not "the kind who get paid off" as you put it.

Hehehe, you're an old dude! :)

When I saw Batman 89, I had just gotten braces and it was a bad time since I couldn't even drink without it hurting. Batman 89 was my first favorite big movie event, and I loved it. In hindsight, the movie isn't so good, but when you're a kid (I was 12), it was awesome. I remember wearing my very simple but effective Batman shirt, which was simply black with the bat symbol in huge yellow across the front. I always preferred that to the more complex shirts where Batman is swinging around or something. Anyway, I had a great time at the movie and it took my mind off the pain of having my teeth enveloped in pain-inducing metal.

I was excited to see Batman in '89, I was 14 years old and thought it looked cool. However, I was more into Jack as the Joker (as was Burton apparently).

I was 4 when Superman came out, and was enveloped in all the following films. Superman 2 I clearly remember seeing as a double feature with Empire Strikes Back.

One of my first few memories that i really can truely recall was going to see supes 4 in theaters. I was only 4 but i think even though in hindsight the movie sucks, thats what made me a supes fan. I will always remember the line. "DESTROY SUPERMAN NOW"!!!! :)

I was 3 when he was cast and 4 when the movie came out. :)
