Let's say the scale is 1-5 5 being the oddest of A-movie in the superhero genre. Any thoughts appreciated, So where does this F4 slide into as of what we (don't) know?

Right now, I'm thinking 3, but 5 is a strong darkhorse.

In terms of 'odd', I think this one creates its own class. We can't say for sure how that will translate to screen, but I've never seen a film (like this, not counting indie films etc.) for which the director has been completely MIA - no mention of the film from him and not even a single photo or sighting since prior to the start of production. Add to that no official announcements of the cast, no released set photos (and other than the leaked photos, we never saw the cast even on the street while they were filming), no logo and not even an official name for the film, and I think this film creates a whole new level of 'oddness' that we've never seen before.

I think there are plenty of movies that fly under the radar with no significant press. I've never seen a major blockbuster film or movie with hopes of being a franchise do that. If we narrowed it to comicbook movies, it would be odd. In fact, I think Trank's first film had more pre-release publicity than this one has had so far. Maybe if we compared it to a movie like District 9, did that have more stuff released in advance?

The timeline seems weird too. Maybe I'm just wrong, but it seems that principal photography wrapped extremely early compared to the release date. That's probably a good thing from a post-production perspective, but it also suggests that the movie didn't have too many sets.

Movies that usually fly under the radar that are supposed to be summer tent poles equals out to be being sub par. This is supposed to be a summer release superhero film and no news what so ever about it is coming out???? Studios who want to build hype put info out to the hungry fans to drive up interest. This is not the case. I could be wrong but I think FOX has seen a rough cut and know it's not going to be well received.

Its definitely odd but it depends on how you look at this situation. I believe Fox was using this production to get Disney to bite on a worthy deal. Fox knew at the time Disney wanted a few of the supporting characters and even the FF themselves since the rights were so close to reverting. Announce a production and release date and see what Disney do. If Disney was willing to extend the DD rights for a couple of characters maybe Fox could get something else they wanted.

Disney probably looked at this farce like many of us did and called their bluff. I think both sides were waiting for the reception of GOTG before making any serious talks. Disney won that round. Fox probably figures either Disney can make an offer or they go on and produce this film on a cheap budget and maybe recoup the loss while retaining the rights and playing this game for seven years again. Fox still has it as a bargaining chip. Disney knows they can make plans for phase 3 at least without anything from the FF.

X-Men First Class.

Different tone from previous movies, younger cast, fast shooting schedule, talented cast and Director, little info before release

Did they have anything at NYCC? Or at least an announcement explaining why like they did at SDCC?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Chronicle was similar. I remember seeing a commercial on tv for the movie like two weeks before it came out and I was like "WTF? How did I miss this? How did I not know this was coming out?" Maybe that's just Trank's style? He likes his films surrounded in JJ Abrams-like secrecy? Probably not likely but just a thought.

Very much like the BayTurtles movie so far.

It is pretty much exactly like Dragonball Evolution.

X-Men First Class had a ton of info released ahead of time compared to this film. If you actually look back at some news archives, they were actually teasing the opening of the film and the costumes shortly before filming. This is nothing like the First Class situation. The younger cast bit is also blatantly wrong. Some are older.

@KR Sadly, Dragonball Evolution actually had a bit more promotion than this film has at this stage in production.

It is a pretty odd production and not in a good way. I think it's too overly secretive. I get not wanting to show a lot but they shouldve released a cast pic or something by now.
2 major conventions came and went and nothing really has been announced.

Im not up to date on this production but are they shooting this on digital backlot like 300 or is it largely going to be set in space, the N-Zone, etc? Im just wondering because there was like no outside filming right?

The tone in FC was very much the same to the OG X-trilogy. One was a soft reboot prequel period piece of existing characters in a timeline and universe, one is not with an introductory story. Side by side your case doesn't stack up.

Those points would be valid if you listed BB, not FC.

Far as we know it's going to take place almost* entirely in the Baxter Institute and they're going to open a portal to some place. Might be the Negative Zone, we don't know if they'll even call it that in the movie.

Far as we know.

*Emphasis for anyone who wants to be pedantic.

Very few things add up about this production. One of the strangest things is the apparent heavy use of cg environments and greenscreen while in every interview with someone involved they reiterate that the film will be "GROUNDED, GRITTY AND REALISTIC!"

I am honestly quite baffled by the production of this movie.

Haha, Dragonball Evolution was kept a secret too? I never followed that production.

I think Fox is just waiting for AoU to come out with its trailer first, otherwise it will be eaten alive by the mouse's pr machine.

That makes absolutely no sense.

At least Dragonball Evolution got (admittedly awful) set pics. This production's strangeness factor probably is on par with Tommy Wiseau's The Room.

except im betting it's not going to become a cult classic like The Room. or maybe it will and that's the big joke that we're all being victimized by.

Actually I pretty much guarantee this movie will be awful
