How the hell can Marvel let Loeb destroy Ultimates?

I just gone done reading Millar's Ultimate's run from start to finish. That easily has to be one of the more entertaining runs that I've ever had the pleasure of reading. It was everything a comic should be as far as I'm concerned.

Yet, Loeb has completely destroyed the title. I mean, there is no way to defend his work on the first 4 issues. It's awful. The dialogue is outdated, sloppy and just plain bad. Is Millar ever planning on coming back?

Also, is this the biggest drop off in quality for a title after the creative team has changed? For me it easily is.

I'll admit that Millar's run had some okay ideas in an alternate universe sort of way, but what did you find so entertaining about it? It was grating to read Ultimates, even if I liked some ideas, when Millar was showing massive disregard for what makes the original characters great. On a pure "WTF" or action level, it was satisfying. But if you honestly believe this to be the standard for comics, I have a laundry list of ongoing comics that are fun and don't need "OMG random violence X-TREEEME!" to be so.

As for Loeb's run, I gave up after #2. Maybe there's vindication for his work on Hulk, but he promised that he'd keep everyone in character while he compensates for politics with action. So the first thing he does is drastically change Ultimate Thor and Valkyrie for little reason...? Mad's approach isn't to my liking, either. Rather than making it original-inspired, he's just drawing this as the normal MU with some UU costume cameos. Totally the wrong way to go about this.

I've went back and reread the first four issues today and my theory of Scarlet Witch's powers going bonkers is really starting to make sense. Her control over her abilities may have been degrading over time making slight changes with nobody really noticing. Plus with the reveal that [blackout]Magneto[/blackout] is the mastermind behind Ultimatum his urgency to aquire Scarlet Witch's "body" may have future implacations. I think hes' the one that issued the attack on Wanda knowing that her power, out of control or not, will make sure that bullet wouldnt be fatal.

Millar just went into a different direction with Avengers. It wasn't for everybody but it was meant to be a modern day update of the team.

He didn't have much continuity to build on either so he could start from a blank slate in a more realistic universe then 616. Loeb didn't have that excuse.

Your quote explains Loeb's more then Millar's.

Millar's did have action but it had tonnes of build up for every action scene. They were complex, interesting people not two dimensional parodies who fit in All Star Batman and Robin.

...did we read the same Ultimates?

I mean I even say this as someone who enjoyed the parodies.

Millar's Ultimates had their insane moments but they were far from two dimensional.

It was amazing the detail Millar would use in every scene just from the dialog.

Jeez, you can always just skip v3 if you hate it so much. It's not like the next creative team can't just retcon the whole run if they so choose.

No, it's not. Loeb has already said he doesn't think Ed is going to do Ultimates 4 because he's having too much fun on the Hulk.

I had also read that Ed had finished his run before Joe Mad even finished issue 2, so believe what you want.

Loeb again? Hells yeah

I'd love it if Ed were his artists though, not that I'm not enjoying the **** out of Mad right now

I've loved Loeb whenever he works with Sale. The two just seem to have great chemistry. I know Loeb has talent, but damn....this is just inexcusable.

Wasn't there some news at one pointing hinting towards Millar coming back to Ultimates? I really don't understand how anyone can even attempt to defend Ultimates Vol. 3. It's utter trash.

I couldn't make any sense out of it. I'm going to say it's one of the worst comics I've ever read and the biggest drop off in quality since a change in creators.

The only other I can personally think of is the lottery quality ******** I go through every time a Spidey comic comes out. I just never know if I'll like it, but goddamn it makes comic life interesting.

Oh and I dislike Bru's DD. zzzzzzzzzzz...

I don't see what's wrong with Daredevill. I haven't picked up a DD comic since the one-shot, but from what I remember they were doing good things on that title.

I took a break from reading after the Mr. Fear arc, it was really good at that point, and i hear the current arc is good too, i dont see whats wrong with Bru's DD?

Bru's run on Daredevil started out AMAZING and then just kind of fizzled out to me. It turned into every other Daredevil story arc ever. Someone comes in....destroys DD's life....he is pushed to the brink and snaps......then he has to build himself back again through the help of his friends.

Don't get me wrong...I'm a HUGE Bru fan and it's not bad writing at all, I still buy it every month. It's just been done to death with DD. I keep hoping he has some kind of over arcing plan like he does with CAP. Or maybe incorporate DD more into the larger MU a little bit.

It's been kind of boring since "The Devil in Cell Block D." And Mila, especially in the Fear arc, has become a completely unlikeable *****.

I love Brubaker but I'm not up on DD continuity and so found it inaccessible and boring. I think I expected more of a superhero comic than a crime caper. I might try downloading a whole arc and judging it again. Hmmm...
I have a couple of Bendis trades and read odd issues before Bru and loved it so it's all a big disappointment to me so far:(

I liked Ultimates for the same reason I LOVE The Authority. Sometimes it's good just to see way overpowered people beating crap up. Good writing helps, too.

That said...this run of Ultimates is one grade above toilet paper.

And only because if you wiped your ass with it, you'd probably get a nasty rash.

I've got to agree, the first couple of runs of Ultimates kicked ass, but after Millar left and and they changed artists it took a HUGE nose dive. I will start buying again when they get a brand new team on the book. To bad though because it was one of my 'must buy' books along with Authority for a long time. Just my two cents.......
