DreamWorks Animation announced today that How to Train Your Dragon 2 crossed the $600 million mark on Labor Day, while the third installment has been pushed back a year.

A record-breaking opening in China coupled with success in territories around the world have catapulted "Dragon 2" to become the highest-grossing animated film of the year and one of the top ten grossing films of the year in any genre. Through Monday, How to Train Your Dragon 2 has grossed $174 million domestically and $426 million in international markets.

The company also announced that How to Train Your Dragon 3, which was facing Finding Dory and The Nice Guys on June 17, 2016, has been pushed back to a June 9, 2017 release. It has that date to itself for now, although right before it comes the second LEGO Movie on May 26 and a week after another Pixar movie is scheduled.

I am a fan of this film, but it is nowhere near the original. The Lego Movie is far superior imo. This was a good movie, Lego was a great one.

I couldn't even make it through Lego, but I wouldn't be suprised if it won. And many Oscar bait films arent all that "original" so that is hardly something that would keep it from a nomination and win. This film was great.

It probably will win, but it isn't a great film. Lego is great. It is original, hilarious, heartfelt, with quality characters and a fully realized plot.

HTTYD 2 misses where the original nailed it. It has funky pacing and plays it safe, refusing to explore the obvious questions. Like why isn't their some actual friction over his mother leaving, why is his mother pretty much still normal even after living with dragons for 20 years, etc. HTTYD 2 is more the normal Dreamworks, where as the first was actually something special.

But it is no wonder. They neutered the script and cut somewhere between 20-30mins before they even started animating.

Dreamworks shut down PDI/Dreamworks and laid off their 500 workers. They are outsourcing the film Captain Underpants to a studio in Canada. The Penguins of Madagascar was outsourced to India. Kung Fu Panda 3 is being made in China.
