Hulu’s Mike | Trevante Rhodes is Mike Tyson

Yup, this one and there’s supposed to be supposed to be the limited series from Foxx/Scorsese/Fuqua.
I didn't realize the Jamie Foxx one was turned into a miniseries. Yikes. That might put it on an even bigger hold if not completely shelved in its current state at least.

There’s been no update on that series for a year. Foxx is great for his age, and he would do great, but there’s no way he could be de-aged with CGI for TV.

Agreed.

I was/am psyched for it. But I don't think it'll happen

Just like the Richard Pryor movie with Mike Epps :(. I think he's played Pryor twice but still not in a Pryor biopic

Really hope this raises Rhodes' stock. He deserves more A-list, headlining stuff.

He really does! I’ll say it again, I thought he was going to go places after Moonlight, then I got more excited when he was part of the ensemble for The Predator. Obviously, it didn’t turn out well.

One of the best parts in an otherwise bad movie. Same, to a lesser extent, with Bird Box.

I do wonder why he's not. For sure he's probably losing the major studio roles to Michael B Jordan and dramas probably to Daniel Kaluuya. Even taking into account the anti-black or racism biases, I would've thought he'd be doing more indie fare or a major TV show. Same with Corey Hawkins a bit. Hawkins is doing great but after Straight Outta Compton I thought he'd be one of Hollywood's new leading men. I expected that for Jason Mitchell too...but it's obvious now why that didn't happen

It looks alright.

But is it just me cause I just don’t buy this lead actor as Mike Tyson? The intensity is missing or something.

It’s a shame that this is a TV miniseries because this could’ve been Trevante Rhodes’ Oscar. It’s also one of those shows where you can tell they went into this as a movie and then hacked it up every 30 minutes for a tv episode; it feels like a film.

Really well done so far, Rhodes got Tyson’s mannerisms and that lisp DOWN.

(Mike Tyson if you’re reading this, please don’t beat my ass for viewing this program).

Trevante Rhodes is absolutely phenomenal in this so far as Mike Tyson and while I definitely keep watching I really do wish they just dropped all the episodes at once so that I could binge it.

Finally watched the series in its entirety yesterday, and I thought it was really well made. Trevante Rhodes and Russell Hornsby were the clear standouts for me, and they deserve Emmys, Golden Globes, etc for their work. Everyone did a great job, though.

Not sure how people felt about the show cutting back and forth between the present day show and the various eras where he broke the fourth wall, but I dug that along with the direction, cinematography, the songs, the recreations of events, etc.

Just wished the episodes were longer instead of 20-30 minutes.

Also, once again, Rhodes really felt like Tyson in terms of mannerisms and his lisp, like Shinobi Shaw said.

I will admit, episode 5 was very difficult for me to get through, wasn’t expecting the narrative change to Washington.

Binged this and...eh. I feel like it broke the cardinal sin with biopics (other than don't be boring). I feel like you could've just read the Wikipedia article about Tyson and gotten the same effect as watching this movie.

Rhodes killed it. As I said months ago he deserves way more work and now that he shows that he can play a character he really deserves it. I very surprised no major studio has picked him up for anything even taking in anti-black bias into account. Don't see why he couldn't have played the bad guy in Creed III. But I digress

But yeah for a 8 episode/4 hour piece of work this kinda felt by the numbers and shallow. Maybe it's because "everyone" knows Tysons story by now whether it be through the news, through a documentary, or from the man himself that it just feels repetitive. This was just very surface level and I feel like despite the runtime it just glossed over so much like his daughter dying and his conversion to Islam. They showed it but they kinda just came and went.

It was also kinda toothless in that it didn't really take any stance on Tyson. 'I, Tonya', right or wrong, firmly stood in the "She is misunderstood" category. 'Straight Outta Compton', again right or wrong, really downplayed the group member's behavior. 'Wolf of Wall Street' showed Belfort as an unrepentant, selfish hedonistic a-hole. Here it feels like they straddled the fence. Sometimes they made him seem misunderstood, sometimes he was just a monster. And you can say that's just reflective of life, but it's not that interesting. Also They really downplayed Tyson's behavior. Note: Tyson has been accused of rape at least 3 times. The one time he went to jail for, by Bill Cosby's daughter, and by Robin Givens. And beyond the accusations Tyson admitted to beating up women outside of Robin Givens. Not saying you need to make it exploitive but you shouldn't downplay it completely.

Also the boxing scenes were pretty mediocre. Really should've done something more with them.

And I think some directors are not doing the forth wall biopic thing that well. When it's done well it's phenomenal like I Tonya, Goodfellas, Wolf of Wall Street. But in Mike it reminds me of the HBO show Winning Time where it's just not done that well...but Winning Time is way worse with it

I think another issue is that this could've also been a movie vs a show. This has been a struggle for a minute. Maybe a movie where they just focus on a certain period of his life instead of his whole life story.

TL;DR: I've seen better. I've seen worse. Rhodes was great, everything else was pretty mediocre. It's better than the old HBO Tyson biopic but that's not saying much
Did I mention Rhodes was great?
