We humans are capable of doing incredible things(space travel, curing diseases, ect.), However we are also capable of doing horrible things(genocide,war,racism,sexism,ect.). How can we do better? How can we reach new heights in the field of technology, medicine, space travel, and peace keeping efforts? this is a thread in which these topics can be explored. :yay:

How can we do better? We can't. The world is too focused on the market. The only technologies that will improve are the ones that are marketable. Unfortunately most medicines aren't really marketable and neither is peace. I mean why sell a drug that cures AIDS when AIDS patients have to take twice as many drugs? Why stop a war when you make money from selling bullets?

I see a dystopian cyberpunk world in our future. Not one of hope and peace and prosperity but one of bottom lines, advertisement and bloodthirsty capitalism.

Our society should be like the one in Brave New World.

Getting rid of women would end most conflict............no offense to any women reading this, it's not really anything about you it's just that men are stupid

We get rid of the market and the currency my friend. New World Order FTW!!!

I agree with MW that we're making too much money off of disease and war right now to truly advance ourselves as a species. Either our own addiction to technology will kill us all (Terminator) or we'll end up with a catastrophic third World War (Star Trek). I doubt we as a species will ever be able to put petty differences aside and unify to promote our own advancement as people. We have plenty of potential to turn ourselves around until we become obsessed with the iphone or other next great technology.

It seems it takes a great catastrophe like The Holocaust or a terrorist attack to bring the countries of the war to unite and even then we come together to fight a common enemy.
I believe that if we discovered life elsewhere, the nations of our planet would quite possibly come together and reach out to them :woot:

Perhaps it would be easier if we were free of religion, it's like a wall between people.

Hmm... Let's see, it costs 6 million dollars to improve a person, and there are 6 billion people on earth. By my calculations, it will cost 36 quadrillion dollars to advance humanity. Just so you know, this is what 36 quadrillion looks like as a number:

36,000,000,000,000,000

That's a lot. Maybe we should try and pay off the deficit first. :p

what kind of thread is this?

op must be seven and impressionable; also, the username is so fitting.

Then we fall into a system of bartering and trade. People are still greedy even if it's not for money.

I tend to agree. Unless something catastrophic happens then we're not going to get any better. There's no chance of this happening naturally or organically as we know it now. There would need to be an unnatural technological advancement along the lines of FTL travel or there would need to be a catastrophic devolution of technology (Anybody watch Fringe? Wanna join the ZFT?).

I can try and agree with this. Very Star Trek: First Contact you know. We meet aliens and the whole world changes for us right? But I think instead of open communications we would probably just start another space war. Sort of like... some sort of Star War. ;)

I am not seven and not very impressionable, im just open to the idea that the world can be a better place my friend. It seems people have lost their sense of "wonder" in this world and I believe we can change that. As for my username... I just like the ring it has to it.

Yes but who would do the work?

Thankfully, we can eliminate alot of work with comouters and improving technology. One man can do the work of 100 men thanks to technology.:applaud

I honestly don't believe it'd take six million dollar to improve myself. Wait a minute... WE COULD ALL BE LIKE THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN!?!?!

With inflation who knows how much 6 mil is in today's money.

Advancements in science and technology will always lead to advancements in warfighting. They will forever go hand in hand, human nature is a female dog like that.
