I was driving around downtown this morning and my friend and I got pulled over for a driver's license check. I speak almost zero Japanese so my friend spoke for me. She told the police officer that I was American and didn't speak Nihongo... he smiled, laughed, said something to her and let us drive on. I asked her what he said...

She told me that he said, "He looks Japanese, why doesn't he speak Japanese??"

It's so strange having the appearance of a group of people and being an outsider. I think I now know how Will Smith felt when he first got to Bel Air.
