I believe under the letter of the law, technically, it is considered theft.

However, I believe you should be careful with your **** and if you lose it/drop it, this is the consequence. If I had saved up for months to buy an Ipod, you'd bet I'd have a death grip on that that thing where ever I went.

Also, people really shouldn't really try to substitute the stolen item with other objects. Than you start getting into degrees of morality and that's always a debatable issue as everyone has their own personal code of ethics. A dog with sentimental value or a wallet with private and important information is not equivalent to an Ipod. Yes, in the court of law theft is theft no matter what the item is, however this is the court of public opinion.

That being said, if you really did want to return it I wouldn't bother with a newspaper ad. You'd be better off just posting a few letters around the area you found it. They'd most likely be retracing their steps and come across that area.

Me and a friend found a XBox360 game in a store someone left, and we could have kept it but we gave it to the worker of the store, and then I noticed someone kinda looking around and deduced it was him who lost it and told him his game was with the clerk.

Take it to the Police, and if it's not claimed in 30 days, it's his. But, at least then he tried.

When my brother worked for the Post Office, he was traveling behind a pick up truck. At a Stop Light, the a couple of tool boxes fell out of the back of it. He immediately took it to the Police Station, and if anyone claims to have lost these tools, they can identify it, and keep it.

My brother went back to check, and no one showed up for 90 days. He got to keep it. He later found out that it was worth over $3000. But, at least he tried to return it.

Yes, it's great that he found an ipod. But, what makes him a respectable human being with concern for his fellow man, is integrity, he could try to find the owner, and if it's not claimed, then he can keep it. It takes little effort at all.

That "lousy ipod" is someone's property that they spent a lot of money on.
