I made this thread because I have been assigned on one of my film classes, a project in which I have to pick four films from a specific country and analize them within the context of the country's sociopolitical and cultural enviroment. I have chosen scotland and I would like if you guys could point me or recommend some good fims from scotland, atleast four, from any genre.

Some could be from the 80's or 90's and others could be more contemporary. I would really appreciate if someone helped me out here.

Thanks in advance.

Ok, I will list a few, and get back to post links...

Trainspotting: Exploring drug abuse in Edinburgh, and it's impact on a group of friends.

My Name is Joe: A recovering alcoholic tries to carve out a new life for himself, and come to terms with the demons of his past. Very good film.

Local Hero: I have not seen this, but it's supposed to be very good, it's about some American developer coming over and trying to buy up a small town(IIRC)

Restless Natives: I don't know if this will suit your purposes in regards to a serious discourse, but I had to mention it as it's a great Scottish movie. Two naive friends become folk heroes when they start dressing up as a Clown and a Wolfman and holding up buses, using weapons furnished from the joke-shop one of them works in.

Ratcatcher: Pretty interesting film about a working class community during the refuse workers strike of the late 70s, hence the rats of the title.

Gregory's Girl: A coming of age story set in a Scottish secondary school, about a guy, who plays in goal for the school team, who falls for a girl who ends up playing in the school football team. If you have not seen this movie, I highly, highly, highly recommend it, it's hilarious, really great.

Small Faces: about the gangs in 1960s Glasgow.

16 years of Alcohol: another grim but great movie about a Scottish alcoholic. I have not seen all of this movie, but what i saw of it was very good. I put the dvd off for a break as it was pretty grim, and never got round to watching the rest of it before my mate took his dvd back, lol. Directed by Richard Jobson of the punk band 'The Skids'. He was mentored through the project by some accliamed Japanese film director just before he died iirc.

The Acid House: an adaptation of Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh's short stories, 3 of them. This is ok, worth a watch if you are interested in Welsh's stuff, but sometimes feels like it was made for tv.

Braveheart: Conan the Barbarian buys a kilt, paints his face and moves to Scotland. Starring Mad Mel Gibson.
