However, in the late-80's Iran ordered a fatwa against Salman Rushdie for his novel "The Satanic Verses" and since then it's been synonymous with "a hit".

Not an ultimatum. Ultimatum is a harsh word that involves threats.

Not at all. They are a scholarly opinion on a matter of Islamic law. A fatwa is issued by a recognized religious authority in Islam. But since there is no hierarchical priesthood or anything of the sort in Islam, a fatwa is not necessarily "binding" on the faithful. The people who pronounce these rulings are supposed to be knowledgeable, and base their rulings in knowledge and wisdom. They need to supply the evidence from Islamic sources for their opinions, and it is not uncommon for scholars to come to different conclusions regarding the same issue.

As Muslims, we look at the opinion, the reputation of the person giving it, the evidence given to support it, and then decide whether to follow it or not. When there are conflicting opinions issued by different scholars, we compare the evidence and then choose the opinion to which our God-given conscience guides us.

Nothing like an ultimatum.

For instance, Osama bin Laden is NOT a religious scholar, Shiekh or Imam of any kind. He's overwhelmingly denounced among the Islamic community but he gives "fatwas" all the time. And outside his supporters no one follows what he says. The person has to be reputable with in the Islamic communities eyes and the ruling has to be seen as "fair" and Islamic for it to be accepted by Muslims. A good example of this is Coffee. Coffee is not mentioned in the Qur'an so there was a debate among Jurists when it reached Arabia about whether it was Halal (basically "kosher"). Initially some Islamic Jurists forbade it. However, since it was seen as unharmful by the Islamic populous they denounced the fatwa banning it.

This guy reminds me of David Copperfield. I listened to a radio show last fall, and they got ahold of a phone message Copperfield sent to some chick he met. Apparently he was holding a big party on an island (his own?) and he invited her. His message started out as, "Hi, [random chick] this is David Copperfield. Also, people don't realize that a "Fatwa" , means Religious Opinion on a matter.

You can disagree if you like. No one forces you to accept it.
