The only two movies coming out that are really big blockbuster tour-de-force things are Harry Potter and Public Enemies. Usually there are about four giant action spectacle flicks of the PG-13 variety, but it just seems so empty this July with mostly family comedies and comedies in general. Regardless of your thoughts on G.I. Joe they probably should have released it this month.:o

As a whole, yeah. But Public Enemies and Harry Potter have been my two most anticipated films of the summer since last year, so yeah, that makes up for it for me. :D

Blame the writers strike.
Studios were either faced with going forward with their movies , despite having incomplete scripts or simply push back their movies till they got things right.

ANd by the look of things , the credit crunch might also have a (big) affect on movies for some years.
Check out an interesting article that was posted on Nikki FInke's website :

The Status Of Studio Development Coffers: Disney Running On Empty, Sony Filling Up

I've confirmed that Disney is telling its on-the-lot producers that the film studio is out of development money right now. So no new script purchases and no filling open writing assignments openings until September at the earliest. That's because Disney will be tapped out until the funds are replenished in October because of the way its fiscal year works. Things are so bad that the film studio's line was "...except for Bruckheimer" for a while -- but apparently even mighty Jerry is going to have to use his own funds if he wants to continue developing material. It's not like this wasn't expected, but this time around it's more severe, I hear. When profits at the film studio sank a whopping 97% last quarter, because Disney's slate bombed in the midst of Hollywood's box office boom, boss Bob Iger forced the film studio to what he called "address costs at virtually every level" which meant cutting back even further the film studio's pic output, production budgets and marketing costs.

The rest of the 2009 studio development business is in piss-poor shape. "It's crazy how ****** the spec market has been this year, especially given what a debacle 2007 and 2008 were," a source tells me. MGM is fighting to survive. Universal and Warner Bros will develop a little right now. Paramount desperately wants to make money so, if anything, it wants to speed up development. But there are still those leftover DreamWorks projects there. Fox is proceeding normally for this time of year. By contrast, sources at production companies with deals on the Sony lot -- yes, there are still a few -- claim SPE is flush. (Also, its fiscal year just begun.) "They'd actually like to buy more spec scripts but just haven't found much that's gotten them excited," a tipster tells me. "There's no problem in Culver City. Sony's giving certain producers the greenlight to fill open writing assignments."

Summer '09 in general has been really lacking and pretty much garbage. Only Drag Me to Hell and The Hangover have been worth the money so far.

it seems like all the blockbusters besides trek have sucked lol

I forgot about Trek yeah that was entertaining, the only thing Abrams ever did that actualy kept my interest even though it still had it's TV moments lol. I heard UP was really good but I still haven't seen it. Wolverine and Terminator sucked though and I didn't have to see Da Vinci Code Too or Land of the Lost to know that those sucked as well the trailers were boring enough.

all the best movies came out in May and now the summer feels light and boring
i still wished that Terminator Salvation was released in the first week of June, it would of made the summer better.

Sadly, I actually want to see G-Force next month along with Public Enemies. That is how much I am wanting an action-esque movie.

We were pretty spoiled last year with a descent movie almost every week, but yeah, July is pretty sparse. :/

Funny People by Judd Apatow comes out at the end of July and I am hearing the "O" word (as in Oscar) for this movie.

^Well, yeah I know there are comedies this month, but I mean big action-y flicks.

Yeah, the studios shot their load back in May. I guess the wanted a return ASAP or whatever B.S. they shill.

Next July will be loaded with The Last Airbender, Predators, Inception and Salt.

Paramount desperately wants to make money so, if anything, it wants to speed up development.

No wonder Indy V is getting started so fast.

How soon we forget 2006 :o...

This year is shaping up to be just as bad

X-Men Origins and Terminator Salvation alone = Superman Returns

Yeah, 2006 was a horrible summer for movies. 2009 might actually surpass it. We'll see. July and August look so bland compared to June and especially May. Yeah, we are getting a few good looking movies in there, but the only thing that screams huge summer blockbuster is The Half-Blood Prince.

:o

last year was so nice

This year is decent, so far the only movie that let me down were XOW (which I knew was gonna be subpar by the trailer) and TS

Im still looking forward to Public Enemies, Funny People, HP6, The Goods, TF2, (500) Days of Summer, District 9, and Inglourious Basterds.

I think June is much weaker this year. "The Hangover" and "Transformers 2" are the only worthwhile movies this month had to offer. At least July has "Harry Potter", "Bruno", "Public Enemies" and "Funny People".

The effects of the writer's strike are pretty clear.

If Star Trek and Harry Potter weren't moved to this summer, things would have been barren.

Luckily there are some quality comedies coming up, Bruno and Funny People.

aren't studios still blaming the writers strike for the lack of movies out this summer...?

Yeah, I'm disappointed too. The Harry Potter films never impressed me, and I hated the 5th one so I'll probably skip the Half Blood Prince. Public Enemies looks good, but I'm not that excited for it.

I just wish Inglorious Basterds and District 9 were coming in july, kind of hard to wish it were a particular friday in august when school starts shortly after
