I currently read spider-man and batman comics.

I would like to read about some other characters in Marvel and DC.

I am considering buying Marvel/DC crossover graphic novels.

Is Marvel team-up a good comic to get to know some of the other characters?

Is Ultimate better or worse?

- Don't buy Marvel/DC TPBs. They're horrid.
- The latest volume hasn't really spotlighted much B/C-listers.
- Ultimate is in some cases good, in some cases bad.

Kind of missed the boat on that one but the trades are good

Oh, if that's the case try some of the older crossovers. For x-men intro's try age of apocalypse and dark phoenix saga. For general superhero stuff secret wars is a great place to start(the original one not that bag of ****e bendis mini) Or alternatively try civil war, you should still be able to get the back issues and it ties in most of the superheroes around today. Some of it won't make sense due to backstory but for now you can find out anything you don't know at wikipedia.

Re:ultimate/616 neither is better, Ultimate is like a reboot for the Marvel Universe with younger characters and different directions take. Personally I prefer 616 but I'm a continuity ****e and there's more to go around in the main universe

if you want to be exposed to a bunch of different characters, get a crossover like the Infinity Gauntlet, or Secret Wars

Beyond! is a 6-part mini-series with each issue told by a different character's perspective (from what i can tell). the first issue, with the focus on gravity and the shock ending was very good. #2 has just came out and was OK. but it's good to see some lesser characters. some of the civil war tie-ins, like ms marvel, seem to be good for looking at some other characters in the marvel universe. exiles/ new excalibur are more team books with unusual (i guess) characters. i'd advise reading new avengers but yknow... dont. although the last ish followed luke cage and that was pretty cool actually.
ultimate spider-man gets his ass kicked. the ultimates kick ass, ultimate x-men and ultimate fantastic four are at the end of superstar runs (kirkman and millar, i think) so you could get some of those?
i like these threads. it makes me think about what im actually reading at the mo. oh and there's gonna be a new blade series soon and moon knight's just finished. if you want to get into totally new superhero comics, top cow/ image's pretty good. hunter killer, witchblade, the darkness, cyber force etc.. :)

eh, I wouldn't recommend Beyond, since it's starring a cast of completely random B and Z-list characters who it wouldn't do much good to become a fan of since they don't really have many stories about them

I thought gravity was gonna get a big push post civil war(I'm probably wrong here but...)? Also Hank, Venom, Spiderman (or is it?) & Wasp; fairly significant characters surely?

You should be getting, when it comes to Marvel, Daredevil, Captain America, Moon Knight, Runaways, She-Hulk, The Amazing Spider-Man, and Punisher.

All really great books right now. And I'm sure some other posters here could name a few more great Marvel books that either I don't read or forgot to list.

Astonishing x-men for one, joss whedon is god!

Try New Avengers, Astonishing X-men, Fantastic four, Civil War and Civil War frontline.
That'll pretty much throw out a net wide enough for you to catch the characters you like.
