Would have been amazing to have Denzel as Black Panther's father. Then Denzel and Angela Bassett as the parents would have been a cool throwback to Malcolm X from 1992.

I think if Denzel would have known how impactful this movie is to black culture, he would have took a 'comic book role', imo.....

Maybe he will be a villain in the sequel ? This movie will be huge box office wise, so maybe he'll be interested. Any black panther fans know any villain that Denzel could play ??

No. Denzel did not and doesn't need to be in this. This film gave opportunities to a lot of incredible, young and obscurely established black talent. I'm happy with John Kani as T'Chaka. He brings African authenticity and a gravitas that the more well known Denzel wouldnt be able to give the charactet, especially with the small size of the role.

That being said if an American actor were to be cast as T'Chaka, my personal favourite choice would have been Michael Jai White but that's just me.

Yeah, people under the radar in the major roles is a good thing.

Along with Jackson, Denzel's basically "the" big iconic current African-American actor anyway. There are plenty of Americans in this, no doubt, but it's just easier to buy into them in the roles when they're lesser-known.

Denzel's awesome and all, but admittedly he does suffer from a bit of that "Tom Cruise" thing. Guy's iconic, and plays a lot of similar personalities, at a certain point you just see Denzel moreso than the character.

But you gotta admit, it would be pretty awesome to have Denzel as a villain in the sequel !

This is film is a huge impact on black community for african americans. And a lot of the cast is actually not african american, but from other countries... Luckily, Chadwick and Michael B. Jordan are real African Americans. Where as I think all the rest are from over seas.

For African Americans?? It's a big deal for black folk across the diaspora; period. And on a side note, I'll never get America's "African American" label as if it's an adequate substitute of colour. White folk in the US aren't called European American and not every "black" person is African American as so many people are quick to label folks like Ejiofor, Elba, Kaluuya, Oyelowo and Boyega. These guys are all 1st generation British and are identified as black men in the UK as opposed to something silly Like, African British.

Yeah. Hell, didn't Coogler even say something to the effect of "as an American I don't have any more understanding of African life than a white American director would" or something, soon after being hired? Basically glad for getting the job, but his personal take was that a Black Panther flick doesn't necessarily need a black director?

Denzel's awesome, but just because he's a huge American icon of the black community doesn't mean he's right for it. If Jackson weren't already Fury, I don't think I'd want him as anyone in this either. Just too "big".

Chadwick Boseman (USA - South Carolina)
Michael B. Jordan (USA - California)
Lupita Nyong'o (Mexico / Kenya)
Danai Gurira (Zimbabwe)
Martin Freeman (UK)
Daniel Kaluuya (UK)
Letitia Wright (UK)
Winston Duke (Trinidad & Tabago)
Angela Bassett (USA - NY)
Forest Whitaker (USA - Texas)
Andy Serkis (UK)

Come on - you can add Denzel to represent African Americans ! There is ALOT of overseas actors in Black Panther, but this film is a love letter to black community, imo.

But, using that logic, there are plenty of Americans in it already. What could Denzel possibly add?

The only role he'd maybe sorta fit for is Forest's character, and Forest's just fine for that anyway.

Saved for the Sequel :)

(I hope for Octavia Spencer too. Ist too sad Viola Davis is DC already.)

Achebe, Moses Magnum, or Stoneface ??

You never know....I think Denzel's star status has kinda cooled down within the last few years. Him considering a role (or even being approached) for a role in the sequel would be "interesting" to say the least. We all know he can play a good villain.

I vote for Octavia Spencer like Kev4000 above.

But if this movie becomes a success like anticipated, I foresee a lot more A-list actors(black and white) who would normally turn their noses up at these types of movie roles actually consider them. Superhero movies may be a long way from Academy Award contenders, but they have gained somewhat of a respectable place in cinema the last 10 years. Just hope they don't go out the way of the westerns did 50 years ago.

Double Toasted joked that if you were a black actor and weren't in this movie, you need to find yourself another agent, because everyone wants in.

Doesn't change the fact that she's American, or rather, Zimbabwean-American

Huh, I always thought Forest Whitaker was from NY.

We need a new generation of Black leading men. Boseman, Jordan, Kaluuya to name but a few. Idris Elba, himself, is 46.

We drastically need a new generation of Black leading women. Can anyone name any under the age of 30?

I hope Denzel plays Blue Marvel, but we'll see.

Umm....how about the fastest rising movie star we've seen this decade (and shes african american) -

That's cool. It's just a shame that for every Zendaya you could probably point to twelve white actresses in her cohort that are being given opportunities. What other African-American actresses are being given opportunities commensurate with Zendaya? If Kathleen Kennedy is seriously running a feminist shop over there with Star Wars it would be cool if she'd give a leading role to a WOC.

Personally, I'm glad Denzel isn't in BP; he'd be attracting way too much attention to himself and people won't focus as much on Chadrick and MBJ quite as much. Besides, this is the movie where the actresses are really given a spotlight with the brilliant and strong female characters, and they're the ones who should receive most of the attention imo.
