Iron Man I wrote an apology to Downey.

My only issue w/Howard's casting was a cosmetic one; he doesn't look the part. At all. Performance-wise he was good. Whereas Downey LOOKED like Tony Stark & Howard was just a military dude who could've been played by pretty much anybody. Hell, I could've done it. But I've made several posts in several threads about the way black characters are treated as throwaways, so I won't go into it here.

Initially I thought he was a little old, but after talking to my comic dude, and realizing it don't matter if he is 43 since Iron Man is in a suit, I thought he was going to be great.

As for his past, wasn't it instantly obvious that stuff made him great for the role?
Was to me.

IMO, his past made it perfect for him - that he can translate his experience in the role. Its funny not much ppl thought of him before he was cast.

It wasn't instantly obvious to me. Not at the time. Now I don't see how I could've been so narrow-minded.
I couldn't find my original text, but it went something like this:

I wanted to let you know that I thoroughly enjoyed "Iron Man". I must admit, when I first learned you'd been cast, I was enraged. I attacked you for your past & I vowed not to see the movie. I wish you could have heard the ridiculous criticisms I made. I wish you'd been online to see me bash you relentlessly. Most of all, I wish I could tell you to your face...that I was dead wrong. I take it all back.
You were perfect. You made a believer out of this naysayer. Every moment you were onscreen I felt like I was looking at Tony Stark. And I will never doubt you again.

It's true. Stark is a flawed human being, & Favreau exploited those flaws. Downey played up everything good & bad about Stark, & made Iron Man feel like a real person. THat is why I retracted my criticisms. And why I don't mind telling you guys about it. I'm happy I was wrong. Because had I stuck to my guns I would've missed out on a hell of a good movie. And it's just not worth it.
