It’s an simple thread. For the past two years, the Best Picture Oscar has 10 spots, rater the 5 there were before that.

Question is, if there were ten spots before, what movies were going to get a spot?

The 2009 Oscars had:

Benjamin Button
Slumdog Millionaire
The Reader
Frost/Nixon
Milk

I think that the 100% sure if there were 10 spots were going to be:

The Dark Knight
Wall-E
Doubt

With these fighting for the last two:

The Wrestler
Revolutionary Road

So if there were 10 spots in 2009, they were going to be:

Benjamin Button
Slumdog Millionaire
The Reader
Frost/Nixon
Milk
The Dark Knight
Wall-E
Doubt
The Wrestler
Revolutionary Road

What do you think? It’s not needed to post all 5 other movies. You can named 2-3 movies you think were going to be nominated for sure.

In 2008 Oscars the 5 BP were:

Atonement
Juno
Michael Clayton
No Country for Old Men
There Will Be Blood

If there were 10, I would add:

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Sweeney Todd
The Assassination of Jesse James
American Gangster
Into the Wild

Zodiac still gets snubbed huh?

2004 would certainly have Collateral in the best picture list. Possibly Spider-Man 2.

If the Academy always had 10 nominees for Best Picture, then I wouldn't be surprised if most, if not all of these got nominated:

1980 - The Empire Strikes Back (if Star Wars could get a Best Picture nom, this could have too), The Shining
1985 - Back to the Future (If blockbusters like Raiders of the Lost Ark and E.T. could get Best Picture noms, this could have also if there were ten nominees)
1987 - Full Metal Jacket
1992 - Aladdin
1993 - Jurassic Park
1994 - The Lion King
1995 - Toy Story
1998 - American History X, maybe The Big Lebowski
1999 - Fight Club, The Matrix, Toy Story 2
2001 - Shrek
2003 - Finding Nemo, Pirates of the Carribean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (critically acclaimed box office hit, Depp was nominated for Best Actor)
2005 - King Kong (mainly cause of Peter Jackson), The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and The Wardrobe (critically acclaimed box office hit)

I still wouldn't expect any of them to win, of course.
