So let's say you could never read any comics again except for the existing issues of one series. Which series would you pick to be able to read? (You could re-read it as much as you want)

This came to my mind as I re-read the first hundred issues or so of Ultimate Spider-Man again. Man that is one magnificent friggin series which was even better because it didn't have events interrupt it ever, and it had the same artist and writer so it was consistent the whole way. So obviously that would be my pick.

Which would you pick?

Marvel:

Claremont's X-Men run.

DC:

Morrison's Batman run (to keep within the parameters, it would be his work on Batman.)

The MiracleMan run, i NEVER get tired of re reading the issues. The current reprints are beautiful too. I plan on framing a few issues and pages. I one day hope he is somehow introduced into the current marvel universe. im gonna include this as my marvel choice. (simply because they currently hold the rights)

My DC choice would have to be the 1987 flash series, the wally west one. That run is where i started buying comics, not back then tho i started reading about a year ago. But i found a set of 1-12 at my local shop for like 30 bucks and i been hooked since.

I'd probably go with the first volume of Amazing Spider-Man but Claremont's X-Men, Preacher and Hellblazer would all be up there as well.

If it was per company?

DC - Starman 90's series.

Marvel - Amazing Spider-Man. With 700+ issues it's a good long read.

Image - Walking Dead

Eclipse - MarvelMan

Just one though? Probably ASM.

Ok i am game
Marvel-thats easy it would be Spider Man! espcially doing the 70's when Stan was involved! that was some most excellent ^%&*!

DC- thats tougher! there was some great one but if i had to i would go with 1 it would be Morrison's Doom Patrol!
thats when dude was at the height of his powers. hell! i still reread it now cause some of it is over my head.

MARVEL:
My heart says "Captain America" (can I have ALL runs please?) because I'm a little bit biased for it at the moment, as I'm trying to read all issues from Silver Age to present through collecting old issues and the TPB collections, which combined currently have well over 600 stories/issues if you also count the Golden Age stories (Issues #1-75), the Atlas Stories and the Silver Age revival - Tales of Suspense split book issues w/Iron Man, then kick off with the 1st Silver Age solo book CAP AMER #100.

I have recently also discovered and become extremely fond of the New Avengers (1st and 2nd Runs) from a few years back. Shame the second volume's run ended on a very weak note and the series died out. But I think that started Mighty Avengers, which I'm going to get around to trying out eventually.

DC:
Without question, "Detective Comics" was my perferred Batman title and all around DC book growing up.

Marvel: The Amazing Spiderman. 700+ issues of my favorite hero, can't really beat that.
DC: Justice League International.

You guys need to think bigger...

If I had a choice to pick ONE series, it would be Marvel's Essentials...

:yay:

I would say Fantastic Four, but it appears that book is ending (at least for now). So I will say Amazing Spiderman.

Going with TMOB's thought, I'd probably pick the Marvel Visionaries line. I wouldn't do Essentials because a lot of the early Marvel comics kind of suck. Visionaries specifically highlights creative runs that have come to be regarded as the best, for the most part. Granted, there are some stinkers in there (like a Thor Visionaries: Mike Deodato, Jr., as a random example), but for the most part they're pretty great.

Going with the original spirit of the question, however, I'd have to go with Thor vol. 1. Not surprising, I know, but you've got the early stuff all the way to the '90s in one volume, plus a bunch of Tales of Asgard backups. Pretty good variety, given how eclectic Thor's adventures have been.

I'm surprised you would say that. I thought for sure you would want ASM.

Yeah...I understand that... But as it stands now, I'd be getting the first 248 issues of ASM along with over 100 to 200 issues of the other spider-books, the FF, the Avengers, the X-Men, the Defenders, Daredevil, the Hulk, Captain America, Ghost Rider, Man-Thing, Dracula, Werewolf by Night, Moon Knight, Thor, Iron Man, Godzilla, etc...

Having over 150 Essential books would be awesome...

:yay:

Quality over quantity for me, so if it's a single series from any publisher, then IDW's G.I. Joe: Cobra. Preferably the entire run, but if I can only read one volume, then volume two. If I can list a hardcover line instead, though, then G.I. Joe: The IDW Collection. That's my ultimate answer, supposing it counts.

For DC: Marc Andreyko's Manhunter, plus the Batman: Streets of Gotham back-ups, of course.

For Marvel: X-Factor. Again, the whole thing, but volume one if I have to narrow it down.

To modify my existing question:

DC: All of Morrison's run on the Bat-titles.
Image: Spawn.
Marvel: Claremont's X-Men or the Avengers, Volume 1 (1963-1996.) Sure, there are rotten issues, such as #200, but it's still a solid volume.
Devil's Due: Stef Hutchinson's Halloween run.

"Wolverine: Origins" by Daniel Way

(but I'd have to throw in the "Origin","Origins and Endings","Evolution", and "The End" graphic novels too :p)

In MY opinion, having the first 20 years of the Marvel Universe is quality. :yay:
I wasn't really knocking your picks or anything. It's just that all of mine, with the possible exception of X-Factor, are pretty short in comparison to some of the longer runs out there, particularly in Manhunter's case.

I get it... and I understand wanting an important run... but geez, if I could "only" read Watchmen, or "only" read TDKR, or "only" read "Miller's DareDevil"... holy crap, it would get really boring after a while... so while MY option may have a lot of duds, it will have many many stories that I can pick and choose over and over again, thus limiting the "bored" factor.
