... And you had to punch a woman or a child in the face to steal a seat on one of those rescue rafts, 1) would you do it? and 2) would you punch a woman or a child?

I'd straight up clobber a kid into La La Land.

I would punch anyone on that Yacht regardless since we all gonna die, so YOLO right?

Unless it is my wife and kid, I'd do what I have to do to keep on living.

These are very refreshing, very impressive answers. I'm relieved.

Human beings are animals. We'll do whatever it takes to survive.

I honestly think that any answer is going to be less truthful than those proffering it think. People who say they'd do it, no problem, what ever it takes to survive? Sorry, I refuse to believe that such is absolute truth of you or anyone. We've seen too many instances in this country of people that have gone out of their way in terrible circumstances that are a risk to them physically or even certain death. People ran back into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon when attacked. Men volunteered to re-enter nuclear reactors and expose themselves to lethal radiation after the Tsunami destruction in Japan. I don't think glib internet posts capture the full story of human beings...

On the other hand... I feel the same way about anyone thinking that they KNOW for sure that they will always act with the noblest intentions, despite harm to themselves. Until you are in a situation it's easy to say, "Oh, of course I will do the right thing as I've been taught since a child." That's presumptuous. We don't know how we would react, how fear for life and limb can make our inner coward our outer coward.

I think that if you are the type of man that goes on about how you feel the current culture is "feminizing" men (Dear Zod...) and that our leaders are weaklings ext. and your "honest" response to this question is, "Sure, no problem, I'd belt that chick and her 3 year old", well... You may have some issues to work out about stuff.

I would like to THINK that I would do what I believe is right under the circumstances but I for sure don't know that. I do know that I and others have seen that people have laid their lives down for other human beings.

I'm definitely weak and a coward. I'm pretty sure I know this for certain. And I'm totally cool with it. I have zero instincts to help others. I will literally run as far from danger as possible and leave everyone behind except for loved ones.

You admit you would go back for loved ones though. So... You already are showing there are in fact things which would override your supposed certain instincts for self preservation above all others.

BTW don't think that I believe only the noblest heights of human behavior. I'm just skeptical that glib responses EITHER WAY in such places as this are akin to getting even a nano-meter towards the actual truth of your hypothetical, whether the response is "I would potentially sacrifice myself" or "Sure, I'd leave that woman and child to certain death without a moments hesitation." I am of the opinion that people are too complex AND simple at the same time to accept either as absolute truths or the like.

I would just accept death. It was a crappy time to live in anyway.

I would stand on the deck singing "Near!! Far!!! WherEVER you are!!!"

If I knew the ship was going to go down I wouldn't get on it. :o

If I was on it and knew it would be sinking later on then I'd do my damnedest to sink it sooner.

Would Celine try to stop you or help?

Being 1912, I'd find the most obviously deeply closeted guy I can, look him deeply in the eyes and say "Hey, we're gonna die anyway" and we'll be off.

So effectively human beings are too complex to truthfully say one way or another what they would do in this scenario and thus this entire thread is a moot point?

She'd be down in the engine room with a monkey wrench smacking around the guys trying to save the ship and using her sonic screams to make their heads explode.

I figure she was doing that during the end of the movie anyway. That's why the ship broke in two.

Most threads we have are pointless. What's your point? :o

I think that I would take the glib answers about what someone would do with the powers of the Flash on SHH in the same manner that I would comments about someone saying they would be willingly physically assaulting a woman and her child during a sinking ship scenario, Lord Bolton. Plus... I think there is always what I like to call the "Internet Iconoclast Syndrome". That vibe of "I am telling an uncomfortable truth that is also unpopular but I am willing to show how dedicated I am to the truth of human behavior blah, blah", ya know?

As you read in my previous posts, I think there are enough tragedies we have all seen or experienced one way or the other (I live in NYC and since 2001 we've had a spate of happenings you may have heard about) to simply have evidence that people can and do rise to the occasion. But I am also more than aware that people panic, people get scared, people are selfish, ect. as well.

I just think saying some off the cuff remarks about what a person would do in such circumstances equals an honest statement about human nature is to give internet postings with two line answers on a Super Hero forum all more credit than I am willing to give them. :yay:

So you guys are saying I'm not allowed to have a tag team match with Celine Dion in the engine room where we body slam the people trying to evacuate the ship?

So you guys are saying I'm not allowed to have a tag team match with Celine Dion in the engine room where we body slam the people trying to evacuate the ship?

Depends...

1. Is killing the people the point of you and Celine's operation or is it sinking the ship. The two can be mutually exclusive goals.

2. Did you guys exhaust Celine's lightning power already at this point?

3. Are you beating these people up because they can't see the same shade of purple in a Nolan Bat Film movie poster as you do?

4. Are you beating these people up because they are on a different side of the "organic vs mechanical web-shooters" debate?

5. Are you beating these people up because they thought Cavill should smile more?

These and other questions are needed to make the correct moral calculation.

1) We're beating them up because they missed the iceberg and the ship needs to go down to preserve history. Of course at the time we didn't know the iceberg was still five hours away. Excuses for mayhem are fun.

2) She's saving her lightning for when everyones in the water and the ship is almost sunk. She'll be at the highest point and firing lightning into the water to catch any stragglers.

3) They have no idea who Batman is or the majesty of the Burton movies so I declared them heretics and that was all the excuse Celine needed.

4) They also had no idea who Spider-Man was or what a web shooter was. See above for my reasoning.

5) We wanted Cavill to join us but he was busy looking for his Clark Kent glasses that Sawyer ran off with.

Also, we aren't killing anyone. Most of them would have died anyway so the timeline must be preserved. Anyone spouting nonsense about people shooting lightning or blowing up the ship to preserve history would be written off as insane.

No. I know we have survival instincts but I'm not going to take a child's spot on a lifeboat, and by extension cost that child its life. And I would probably Spartan kick someone off the boat if I caught them doing that ****.

Ah... And now you can take the place of the guy you Gerard Butler'd into the sea... Pretty sneaky sis. :sly:
