Animation Illumination's Super Mario movie

Super Mario 2 and Zelda announced any day now lol

Honestly this moves biggest sin is using Bonnie Tyler’s “I Need a Hero.” We all agreed, collectively, as a society, not to use that song anymore unless you’re 110% sure it’s going to be better than Shrek 2.

Hopefully this will open the door for some live action movies too.

Nintento seems to have really hit it off with Universal. Not just with the movie but the theme parks too. Super Nintendo World looks amazing.

Great time to be a fan of the big N.

Well. I mean it's fantastic from a visual perspective and the setpieces are well done. And . . . that's about it.

And anyone who says given the IP, this movie didn't need a script, you are exactly the type of guy in the boardroom that signed off on this and wanted to capitalize on a soulless cash grab. Does your average singular Mario game have a great story, no. BUT there's a TON of Mario related games to draw from that it should've made it EASY to string together a compelling story. This movie was constructed by setpieces and Easter eggs and used lazy storytelling to connect them all. And whatever, it'll gross it's money, and I'm conflicted because I'm happy Nintendo is getting the bag on this. But I'm sorry this isn't Crash Bandicoot, who's fans should be thrilled if they got something like this. But Mario? He deserved better. Where is the heart and soul? The only things that had heart were Jack Black's song and the vfx artists.

Listen my 5 year old had fun, and I'm gonna have great memories that she enjoyed it. But this could've been so much more.

Welll…I liked it a lot. Very good action adventure. Right up with Despicable Me for Illumination’s best. Would sooner rewatch this than most of the (f)arthouse movies ‘professional’ reviewers drool over. They used the Mario IP well and still have space to go in the sequels. Story is universal/simple enough for kids to grasp and have a blast with.

I was surprised to see Diddy and Dixie as well as Cranky Kong in it.

I think you could’ve cut out the wider family subplot and the film wouldn’t have changed at all.

Haha I actually liked that subplot, but you're right because the movie DOESN'T DO anything with it. And that's the problem for me. The first 15 minutes are actually pretty great and it feels like they're about to really put some heart in a Mario story and then . . . it just becomes an Easter Egg hunt for the audience. By the time they bring the family back they just feel perfunctory.

I'm legitimately glad you liked it, but in absolute fairness I think a lot of the professional critics would've been kinder to the film, granted story was still the same, if at least the characters had a tenth of the heart that say Detective Pikachu's and Sonic 2's did, which is why critics were softer on those two. Those two have very formulaic stories but at least both films felt like they made stronger attempts to give you reasons to really root for their characters. Why I gave any crap about Toad and Peach in this film was more about what I brought in with me from my nostalgia than what the movie itself accomplished.

But for real do you, I'm glad you had a blast, I really wish I came out as happy as you.

Yeah this is getting a sequel. I wonder if Daisy and Wart will be in it?

It’ll probably open with Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings.

I really enjoyed it. It's not a deep movie and it has no pretense of being so. It was literally Mario being Mario and dropping a ton of easter Yoshi eggs for fans of all ages.

Mario at this point has been a cultural touchstone for nearly 40 years and this showcased something from the Jumpman days all the way up to Super Mario Odyssey. Cramming that much reference leaves little room for a story but who needs more than a Paper Mario thin one to get this story? Not a one.

Better story and more developed characters in a sequel? Sure, but for this movie it didn't need to do more than justify how Mario is in the Mushroom Kingdom. A sequel would probably involve more Kamek and bring in the Koopa Kids. Maybe give them a little more story.

If Bowser Jr. is introduced, I wonder how Anya's Peach will react to the lie that she's his mother. :hehe:

I would love to see that. I have no idea who would voice him but it could be awesome.
