I respect Jack Kirby a lot, but I always get the impression that he designed things with only one purpose: to look cool. Because of that, he never tried to figure out whether it made sense. I think this is most clear with the Inhumans. The Inhumans look like they have really cool superhero costumes. Which is great, except they aren't superheroes. Given that, the clothes themselves don't really make much sense. The most problematic are the masks. Medusa's mask might have made sense when she was part of the Frightful Four, but it doesn't make sense for Gorgon and Karnak to have masks. On the other hand, Black Bolt without his cowl and mask doesn't look like Black Bolt (seriously, that guy has hair?).

So how would you handle it? Marvel has been pretty faithful at adapting costumes. On the other hand, the most overtly cheesy one, Captain America, has always been a source of difficulty with them. They've either toned it down to make it look more real world (a la the WWII combat outfit) or they've deliberately subverted it by saying it was deliberately cheesy. Now it seems they've got a good compromise going. Here are my thoughts by character, but I'd like to see what others say:

Black Bolt - Without a doubt, Black Bolt presents the greatest challenge. My personal hope is they try to make him look more "royal." I was thinking they could take the glider wings he has and make it into more of a royal robe. This is a vague idea of what I'm talking about (only less *****ey), but not exactly. Essentially, have it cover the shoulders right where his jagged lines on his rib cage are and have it go in the back where it is in this picture. I would still have it double as a glider, I was just thinking of having it more formal. The antenna on his head is more difficult, though. I think it's been toned down over the years. I've thought about making it more of a crown, but I'm not sure (it has a practical effect of powering him, so I don't want to go too far). I don't really have any good ideas for it or the mask. I certainly don't want to see his hair.

Medusa - Medusa has had a number of different costumes over the years. I think all of them are fine, but I'm partial to this one:

Note that it doesn't have the mask at all. That being said, the traditional costume is fine (maybe without the mask):

Or she can wear more than one outfit like every other person in the world does ;)

Gorgon, Karnak, and Triton - I'm just going to address all three right here. Here is a modern take on them that I think works well:

Note that it drops the masks and it drops Karnak's headgear. That being said, Karnak's headgear is fine with me.

Crystal is fine with me (as long as she's wearing clothes and not body paint as some seem to believe ;) ), as is Lockjaw.

What are your thoughts? I'm particularly interested in Black Bolt, who I think will be the most difficult to translate to the screen.

I think you could get away with Black Bolt's tuning fork if you flattened it out on his forehead but left it raised up and white for contrast. Think Cap's wings, they are there but are not protruding.

I like Karnak's tattoos instead of the headgear. His cranium looks huge in that picture so he reminds me a bit of The Leader and Batroc mashed together.

Back on the antennae discussion, I wanted to post this image of Black Bolt from the Marvel Knights Inhumans. Obviously, Black Bolt looks weird without his mask, but the antennae itself works for me as a sort of crown (maybe with a bit of modification). Just an alternative idea:

This isn't entirely what I had in mind, but seeing this on the cover of Secret Invasion: War of Kings involves Black Bolt wearing a royal robe, which is a step in the direction I was thinking of:

Basically, instead of white and gold, make it black and silver (to match the costume below) and make it shorter in the back to double as the glider wings. Anyway, it's just an idea.

I like to think that being an very old, 'secret society', that disguises and reclusiveness is part of the Inhuman psyche and make up. As well as a part of thier long history, espescially when dealing with outsiders, or venturing outside of Attilan. My thoughts are that the royal family imparticular, uses the masks, aside from being a part of Inhuman traditon, to continually impart, visually, to the Inhuman populace, the NEED of secrecy. As well as being ceremonial attire for the royal family.

the Jack Kirby costumes would translate just fine and there have never been better versions...so just go with those...

What works in a comic does not necessarily work on screen, I would go for a much more militaristic feel:

Possibly with the fork either use the above or make it a crown.

What works in a comic does not necessarily work on screen,

a popularly repeated myth - yet we are shown time and again that it does - this seems to be used chiefly by those who do not wish to adhere to the comics designs...

They come from a different culture. I'm not really worried what fashion sense inhuman royalty have. They don't need to blend in to the rest of earths poulation, especially if they live on the far side of the moon.

I figured they'd look sort of like the Asgardians. Half-sci-fi half-fantasy armor look.

Yeah. I could see Black Bolt's outfit being made similarly to Thor's.

Some comic costumes work just fine just not all.

I hope it looks similar to the current Inhuman costumes. Though for Karnak, I don't want the hoodie. And I don't want Triton looking like he's about to scuba dive with the mouth piece.

I can't see them giving Black Bolt and Medusa the mask. It seems pointless.

It's not a crown on his head. The fork helps control his power.

I'm cool with the Kirby designs - though I am rather fond of Crystal's costume in All New Inhumans.

I think they will ditch the old Kirby face masks. Most of the royal family already have in the comics.

I hope we get something like this

If I had my druthers, I'd go for "Game of Thrones by way of Kirby". So, faux high medieval style, with a lot of funky geometric motifs.

Wouldn't mind something along these lines minus the stupid mask.

If a race called the Inhumans who have spent centuries apart from humanity end up looking like Agents of SHIELD, I'll be disappointed. Go nuts, Marvel.
