I am wondering if this 'vague history' concept of Superman Returns is going to effect the way how old and dead (or nearly dead) franchises choose to 'return' to the present.
If Superman Returns is a success, will we see:
Robocop Returns? Jaws Returns? Predator Returns?
Will these movies choose to base their stories on the first (and obviously best) movies of the franchise series and go from there?
Those films started off excellently, but quickly descended to crap with terrible sequels, just as Superman did in the 80's.
For example, Robocop Returns could be how a violent law-enforcing machine deals with a new world where violence is not the answer. It could parallel the notion of police brutality and how we are slowly trying to repress violence in our society after the lessons of the past and present.
Superman Returns chooses to base itself on certain aspects of the first movie (and maybe second), utilizing Brando and Jor-el, Glenn Ford as the earth father, and the origin story, among other things.
Could Jaws Returns choose to tell Amity's story with only the first movie as the background, where the son of Chief Brody deals with a shark and the movie utilizes stock footage of Roy Scheider to show the backstory?
We've already seen how the success of Batman Begins has inspired the James Bond picture with a franchise reboot. Could Superman Returns inspire a new franchise 'remix'?
