A new US Senate Bill would grant the President far-reaching emergency powers to seize control of, or even shut down, portions of the internet.

The legislation says that companies such as broadband providers, search engines or software firms that the US Government selects "shall immediately comply with any emergency measure or action developed" by the Department of Homeland Security. Anyone failing to comply would be fined.

That emergency authority would allow the Federal Government to "preserve those networks and assets and our country and protect our people," Joe Lieberman, the primary sponsor of the measure and the chairman of the Homeland Security committee, told reporters on Thursday. Lieberman is an independent senator from Connecticut who meets with the Democrats.
Lieberman's proposal would form a powerful and extensive new Homeland Security bureaucracy around the NCCC, including "no less" than two deputy directors, and liaison officers to the Defense Department, Justice Department, Commerce Department, and the Director of National Intelligence. (How much the NCCC director's duties would overlap with those of the existing assistant secretary for infrastructure protection is not clear.)

****ing control freaks, **** Lieberman.

They are going to create all sorts of monopolies and corporatist lobby ****es on the internet. This would be the last god damn straw for me if this happens.

Is it just me, or does Joe Lieberman's political positions take him dangerously close to treason a lot of the time?

The U.S. would revolt if one man shut down the Internet

Someone needs to tell Lieberman HE DOES NOT TELL US WHAT TO ****ING DO!!!

No, Lieberman is a fascist. Using the "N" word only furthers the larger problem of people not understanding that fascism still, very much, exists (and is the political philosophy of America).

So does this mean that some men will get their porn the old fashion way?

I don't think this will get pass the proposal stage.

^ Ironic, considering Lieberman is Jewish.

Not the funy kind of irony

This reminds me of China or North Korea...

i don't agree with it and it's a load of bull

but i can see it being said it would only be used in the event of a terrorist bomb threat, say the bomb is denoted by wifi or bluetooth. shut off the net and stop the bomb

still a pile of horse**** that will be abused

They won't be able to shut down the Internet (completely). It's the only thing they've created that can not be killed.

Ugh. I'd like to think we would never do this.

I'd like to think.

Huh...Joe aren't you up for re-election yet? No? 'Tis a shame, indeed.

the govt has always had the "right" to suspend public broadcast communications. they can commandeer the airwaves (or any private institution) in the interest of public safety. they've always had this ability pretty much. now there are things on the net they'll leave open for themselves of course. and there will be ways to get around it most likely (like they did in Iran)
but this is not a new thing.

I might have to bring this before my kindred on /b/. They'll put a stop to these shennanigans.:word:

The American government shouldn't have that right.

Obama is not going to do this as it would give the Tea Partiers another reason to protest towards the government.
