Cybersecurity Act would give president power to 'shut down' Internet

In other words Palpatine is the Richard Nixon of a long time ago in a galaxy far far away?

A nixon sithlord? That would be a thing of beauty. Yoda wouldn't stand a chance.

Its coming. It is really not hard to buy into some of the Obama conspiracy theories the way his administration is shamelessly power grabbing for the federal government.

Yes, but it's been happening for a while now, and tech is making this worse. Look how many devices you own that have some form of GPS. That's even more scary to me than this stuff. I don't think the theorists are right about this shadow conspiracy with obama, that man's not some evil master mind. I'd say he simply has good intentions, but then so did bush, and we are quite clearly paving a way down that toasty warm road.

I'm not sure I believe in the conspiracy theories either yet, but its only a matter of time before we get a president who does not have good intentions and then what? With all these czars the executive branch can all but control the private industries and now its reaching the point where the executive will have power over the flow of information.

That's exactely what I think. Obama isn't going to rule us with an iron fist, but he could very well set it up so the next guy easily could.

And the only thing that could stop that, obviously, would be robonixon.

Why aren't people blaming the senators that are introducing these bills??

Once again fear is making people overreact. Seriously, does ANYONE think this will happen? Not only would it hurt the economy even more, it would hurt other businesses, families financial status, and etc. This is something that I can pretty much guarantee won't happen.

Not sure it's possible to shut down the internet, it's not like you can push a button and make all connections world wide to stop

That's a badass poster.

Robot Nixon can give Zombie Lincoln a run for his money.

I...sorry...I don't have a Zombie Lincoln poster...

nice avatar sunrise.

What you do is get trucks to keep dumping to block the tubes

And get Merlin to stop the magical waves from escaping.

It's quite simple when you think about it, really.

Zombie Lincoln...or...Metal Gear Nixon.

Seems like a helluva race to me.

Why is the government asking for a power they would never use? Why should we give the government power they do not need? These are how dictatorships begin. People start consolodating power little by little. You don't just wake up one morning and have soldiers goose stepping down the streets. I'm not saying that it will happen, I am simply saying there is no reason to give the government such power because the risk greatly outweighs any benefit of possible security in case of a national emergency ("Those who sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither,").

Not to mention, the internet has evolved into something more than a place to look up porn and ***** about movies. It is now a major news source. It is part of the free press. The government should have no right to infringe on it, even in the case of an emergency.

World wide? No. But it wouldn't be impossible to order all domestic providers to shut down.

Agreed. The Internet is just about the only place to receive independent news at this point. The corporate media turns everything into a sports-style competition where the left and right must always fight, even if they agree on something. The corporate media, the Democratic politicians, and the Republican politicians are all controlled by the globalist elite (mostly made up of bankers and the military-industrial complex). The politicians and media are puppets to distract us from the fact that these globalists are constantly enacting policies that move us toward a centralized world government controlled mostly by the banks.

Here's my question, didn't WE used to have the best hackers and ****? Why are the chinese and russian's and such so scary about this stuff, shouldn't they be worried about what our computer nerds can do? Sure our guys like to hack gov. **** and what not, but I can't believe they wouldn't put those russian computer dorks in their place when push came to shove.

WTF, guys, WTF?

Why? To get people to start running around like chickens with their heads cut off in a panic? I can tell you it won't hapen. You have a better chance at winning a $500 billion lottery than them shutting the internet down.

Hell, Obama has a Blackberry, you'd think they'd be dumb enough to shut down his usage of technology? Come on. Let's be realistic here and stop giving in to the fear that the media and other news markets like to present.

So your recommendation is to sit by idlely and grant the government this power because it won't get used anyway? Brilliant, man. Brilliant. We should get rid of the Second Amendment as well, because the citizens will never need to form a milita because the government can't possibly ever do bad things to warrant it. Also, we should forget about the free media, because the government will always tell the truth so lets just cancel that and create a federal media agency that controls all television and radio. And free speech? Let's X out the First Amendment too! Because surely there is never anything bad to say about the government, so why should we allow it?

You honestly can't see why any one would get upset over a law that gives the president sole discretion to block out the largest source of information and communication in the world? Are you really that blind?

This sounds vaguely like V for Vendetta.

the world did exist before the internet......

Yes, and I am not claiming that will actually happen, but there is a reason our federal government was so limited by the framers. To just shrug off giving our leaders such power on the grounds that "They probably won't use them,"
is grossly reckless and just begging to be abused.

the world did exist before the internet......

And the world existed before television, and before radio, and before newspapers. It doesn't change the fact that the internet has become a necessary tool in communication and news information and for the government to infringe on it is terrifying.
