Internet wins, Music industry gives up and puts 25 million free songs up for download

Yeah, lazur posted a similar link about this before Kaine and Steve drove the thread into the ditch.

ah, my bad...i guess I just didn't wanna dig through the culvert this thread had become.

I think they need to find a compromise on all this. True, music downloading is stealing, but at the same time it's actually led to people buying music/TV/movies when they typically wouldn't. For example, once I downloaded this movie, and I loved it so much I went out and bought all the DVDs and sequels the next day. I would've never spent a dime on the movie to start with, but because I downloaded it for free it drove me to buy it.

Basically the one's who lose here are the big name bands and producers. I can see how some cheap bastard wouldn't go out and spend money on Kanye West's Graduation or RHCP Californication. Those are big name acts. On the other hand I can see how someone like "Wheat" or "Cowboy Mouth" would benefit from having some free samples out there for everyone to listen too. They aren't big enough for a person who is not in their region to really know or care who they are.

So basically they need a way to keep this technology alive while still getting some compensation for it.

So why repost it?
Because I'm bugged by all of the common justifications for stealing (another one I hate is the "Metallica has millions of dollars, the absence of my $15 dollars won't hurt 'em."....because a starving teenager in Afghanistan could say the same thing about you...."Look at this, they have THREE boxes of cereal here! I'm going in to take one. They don't need all of that." These disingenuous cowards wouldn't have the balls to see 7 deck chairs on your patio and take one since you have "too many".)
And you always hear that..."Wull, yeah, but when people steal their music, if it's good, they end up buying it, or seeing them in concert, so it's really HELPING the artists."

Yes, that's why practically every single band's website has free videos and songs.
That's why bands give out free singles, or even free albums.

The point is, they're CHOOSING to do it.
If some idiot writes an 8 page book, and decides that it's so monumentally genius that he's going to charge $800 a copy...that's preposterous, but that doesn't mean that we go and steal copies of his book since he's insane and has overcharged.
It means either he'd better drop the price substantially or no one's going to be buying his book.
OR, maybe there's some crazy multi-millionaire who thinks it's a fair price.
That's HIS choice.

And if I write a 1,000 page epic, that I've worked on for years, and I'm hoping to sell it and get some financial return on all of that hard work, so I can keep writing more stories, you don't break into my house, take pictures of each page, and copy them and give them away, and then say you're doing me a favour.

I'd kill you.

Those are damn good points all, and I agree with the morality involved. I'd still steal because it's easy and hard to get caught doing it. Hell if stealing a car was that easy I'd be driving a new one right now. I guess I just feel if most people were honest with themselves, something free and easy is always appealing. (now I'm sure a bunch of righteous people will post how they'd never do such a thing. Though I've gotta say for most of that, telling people how you're a righteous and moral person is more annoying and self serving then just being a thief. I'm NOT saying this is you, you've got a whole artists creation thing going which is a totally different vibe.)

It's not right or fair, but the genie isn't getting back in the bottle, bands will just have to adapt.

I'm actually surprised by the give-up on the part of the music industry. It's sort of like saying "I've had my home broken into a bunch, so screw it, I'll just leave my doors unlocked from now on because they'll break in anyways." This announcement just sends a bad message IMO.

In the same twisted way that i have more respect for some of the Taliban than I do for non-violent Christians...because they actually live by their beliefs enough to die for them, which most Christmas/Easter-Christians would never have the balls or integrity to do...I can respect that honesty^ and prefer it to these ****s that act like they're revolutionary rogue saviours working against big corporations to try and save the world by downloading all 3 Lord of the Rings movies and Blink 182's entire discography.

It's all about hiding behind internet anonymity and the intangible nature of music.
Yes, you can't download a car, or food, or all sorts of things that cost a Hell of a lot less to produce than most of the movies/music that gets stolen.

It reminds me of Holly's thread from long ago that the Gestapo shut down, "If you were 100% guaranteed, no matter what, that you were invisible and there was absolutely no way in the universe no matter what that you'd be caught, would you rape women?"

Everyone says "No way, Sicko! :cmad:"
But the fact is, tons of people would, TONS, and I have a feeling that most of the ones who would, are the ones who get off on illegally downloading stuff.

That's a really interesting question, and I agree with your conclusion.

Personally I used to steal all the time, I was poor and I wanted **** so I took it. I don't do it any more only because I now have money and it's almost inconvient to steal except things like music downloads and movies so that's most of my theft currently. Though I do think that some of the bands that made their "rep" if you will by being antiestablishment have no @ucking place running to their lawyers.

Oh, you get like fifty cool points for relating christians, muslims, the lord of the rings, gestapo and the term "revolutionary rogue saviours" in the same post.

<Wilford Brimley>Anyone who would download Blink 182 deserves scorn. And lots of it. </Wilford Brimley>

Seeing bands on tour and buying their merchandise is how I personally prefer to support my favorite bands, rich and famous or not so much. The money from ticket and merchandise sales goes largely into their pockets rather than the record companies, which is more than can be said about album sales. I'm very selective about the albums I buy and will usually check an album out online to make sure it's not comprised of a couple good tracks mingled with a bunch of shyte. If I like the album, I'll buy it. If not, I'll dump it out of my system and move on. It's a good system.

QFT

The only time I trust my money to go to the musicians is when I hand the actual musicians my money.

lol, no.
The fact that Pop Music today is garbage doesn't absolve Rent from being garbage as well. :o

But garbage onstage is better than just garbage.

I just picked RENT as an example because it's well-known and rock-themed.

I wanted to put that to test by comparing a picture of refuse on a stage to a plain picture of refuse in the street, and I've seen a lot of garbage on stages, so I googled it, but got 'Garbage on stage'. :(

So I went, "Oh yeah, "Garbage"...how about a "messy stage"?

But then I got a kid in that "messy stage". :(

So this just isn't going to work.
