Into the Wild

Watched it last night.....one of my favorites of last year. Truly amazing film. Sean Penn's direction is superb. He captured some amazing shots of Alaska. Whether it was the wilderness, or random animals in the wild...I loved every minute of it. Can't wait to see what he has lined up next as far as directing goes. The performances are outstanding as well. Hol Holbrock's 20-25 minute segment is gut wrenching, great acting on his part. I love the other supporting roles as well, Catherine Keener, Vince Vaughn, etc. all bring there A-Games. The star Emile Hirsh completely transforms into this character, how he wasn't nomintated for an oscar is amazing. He looks like he literally almost killed himself in the role. It was probably my favorite performance of last year.

Into The Wild 9/10

I picked up this movie a couple weeks ago on DVD and have yet to see it. I think I'll see it later tonight or tomorrow night.

It was my #1 movie of 2007.

It was my #1 movie of 2007.

Absolutely. And it can be summed up as a lesson Supertramp learned the hard way....

"Happiness is only real when it's shared." - Chris McCandless

It's incredibly chilling to think that those are some of the last words of a dying man....you think back on the happiness you missed out on in life. It's incredibly sad.

damn, maybe i should netflix this. i've heard incredible things about it.

If you're not moved by this movie, I will free you from Arkham Asylum myself. :hq:

this movie was incredible. the performances were top notch, the scenery was unbelievable beautiful, the music, etc. everything fit perfectly.

Soundtrack was awesome.....need to pick that up

I saw this tonight, a beautifully crafted and moving film. after the 1st 10 minutes i was concerned it was gonna be pretentious with all the philosophical "meaning of life" voice over stuff, however we soon find Chris McCandless was a decent, just quirky, young guy who didn't think the way most ppl choose to live life was "wrong".... he just didn't think it was for him.

The back and forth from the magic bus to his journey to that point is inspiring, sad, funny, warm, lonely, uplifting and ultimately tragic.
The way you see Chris' discovery of himself and of life through his travels is interestingly paralleled by what others learned from him and how he touched many along the way.

His discovery in the end was simple and yet in search of his identity and meaning beyond the everyday he had to pay a price, yet he lived more in those 2+ years than most of us will in our lifetime, so was it a fair trade ? I guess only the real Chris McCandless can answer that.

Emile Hirsch was extraordinary, we all know "Dark and edgy" is the critics choice but i found this character to be one i will think of long after Daniel Plainview and Anton Chigurh have been stowed away into the same vault as Lecter and co....Yes the man was real but he wasn't a famous man, so it took a wonderfully gauged performance from Emile to show us who Chris McCandless was, he didn't shy from the fact at times he came off as selfish in his dogged pursuit of life, yet he was also a fun, quirky, smart and kind guy who was interested in seeing beyond lifes basics.

I enjoyed all of the support characters he met along the way, Rainey and Jan were my favourites though. It felt like Chris could have found his place with them if he'd allowed himself, the second time in particular was great, the scenes with him and Tracy were done beautifully.

Sean Penn's direction is perfect, he never allows anything to slip into schmaltz but he gets every drop of emotion he can out of the movie and it's pivotal scenes, the way he keeps it restrained at points and opens up at others is superbly gauged and he makes full use of the structure of the narrative.
He also fully utilizes the amazing scenery on show throughout Chris' journey, capturing the utter beauty of the vast American landscape. The cinematography is some of the best ive seen.

For me this was a better movie than either NCFOM or TWWB and the best movie of 2007.

I had a feeling you would really like it. I have yet to see DDL performance in TWBB and I did love Bardem in NCFOM, but I thought this performance was in line if not better then Bardem, and i'll be suprised if DDL was better as well. Of course this is just my opinion, but there was just something about this performance that I loved. It's like you said this is a performance you'll talk about for a while, hell I watched it last Tuesday and im still raving about it....I might watch the film again tommorow.

You completely nailed Emile's character he was selfish but there was something that was endearing to him. Some many great scenes in this film....that scene where he eats the poisionous plant, and he realizes that he is more or less dead the emotions he goes through...tremendous acting! What did you think of Hal Holbrock's scenes? For as little as he had, I thought he was great as well.

Im with you best film of the year

His last scene's in the magic bus were all superb, he mined them for every bit of pain and emotion, the way he encountered the bear was surreal.
I thought the stuff with Holbrook was very nicely played, it was like both could have filled a void in each others lives. The father and son each had never had respectively. Holbrook made the most of his short screen time in making Mr Franz a memorable character, i liked the way they bothy taught each other something.

The music was also superb, Penn did some of the best song to scene matching Ive seen this side of Cameron Crowe.

Awesome, glad you finally got to see it and loved it. :yay:
I'm still pimping it out to people at work.

So, I finally saw this yesterday, simply amazing! Emile's performance was unbelievable, the kid is an incredible actor, with a long bright award filled future a head of him. The fact that this, and Gone Baby Gone, the two best movies of 07 IMO got no love during Award season is remarkable.

Overall I'll give 8.5 or 9/10.

The final show of the real Chris McCandless was just eerie. This is definitely one of those movies that just stays with you for a long time after you watch it.

I love movies that I go and see with friends, and then we go to the pub and talk for hours about it. In the past few years, I've seen 3 movies that we talked for days about...."Crash", "Into The Wild", and "Slumdog Millionaire".

I think everyone in this movie did an excellent job, and yes, it should have gotten some love by the academy.

Have you seen Gone baby Gone? If not, rent it! I'm sure you'll recommend it to your friends.

I may watch this again, in a day or so. Hirsch definitely deserved a nomination.
