Exclusive: Warner Brothers Developing Starman Film

No, The Other One / TK

Starman is one of those DC properties that’s gone through several iterations in its 70-year history. He’s been a helmeted dude with a “gravity rod,” a blue-skinned alien with flying shoes (sort of), an alien mutant prince (also notable for being one of the few — possibly only — bisexual superheroes), a being of pure energy, and I believe a couple of others. The current incarnation of Starman is as a member of the Justice League from the future. Or something. DC Comics can be pretty goddamn confusing sometimes.

In any event, according to an inside source, Warner Brother, in partnership with Lin Productions and DC Comics, is bringing Starman to the big screen. Which version is sort of unknown — he’ll wield a gravity rod, have energy powers, and likely be able to fly. One of the more recent Starman characters could also manipulate mass, but not word on whether that power will be present. It’s being produced by Dan Lin (Sherlock Holmes — yay!, Terminator Salvation — hmm…) and Gregory Noveck (Jonah Hex — jury’s still out). No writer or director is attached yet, as the film is in very early development.

Depending on which route they go, it could be a pretty interesting character — the idea of a true intergalactic superhero hasn’t been explored (although next year’s Green Lantern will likely be the first), and it will likely need to be a special effects-heavy production to make it viable. Whether or not this would pave the way to an eventual Justice League movie is unknown, but I’d guess unlikely, unless they scrapped the involvement of the Big Three — Superman (practically dead in the water), Batman (too grounded in Nolan’s gritty real-world universe), and Wonder Woman (trapped in development hell). That isn’t to say that there aren’t plenty of other good characters to use, and given the current work on Green Lantern, who knows.

I know there was a few different versions of starman over the years. if this does happen i wonder which one they will adapt. If this happens will be cool to see another DC guy get his/her shot. But for all we know this could be like the many other films mentioned here or there and poof nothing happens.

I think the Jack Knight version would be great to see. The original Starman Ted Knight could be used in modern times and in flashbacks as well. The Will Payton Starman could work. I am not too keen on the Thom Kallor, Mikkal Tomas, or Prince Gavyn versions, although I did like Thom Kallor's outfit in JSA.

I agree, Jack's Starman would work best as a movie. His character is different, something not seen in a superhero movie yet,
[BLACKOUT]a superhero who would rat her be an antiques and collectibles dealer than a superhero, being pressured by his father to be a superhero and follow the family business.
[/BLACKOUT]
His costume would also be easier than the others.
I would also LOVE to see the scenes between his father, the original Starman [BLACKOUT]and even scenes with the ghost of his brother (the short lived Starman)[/BLACKOUT] His father would be such a cool character, we could even see flashbacks of his father in action in short scenes.
Jack's story also deals with all the other past Starmen too. And it sort of pokes fun at superheroes, like [BLACKOUT]Jack not wanting to wear the goofy costume (although it would mean a great deal to his dad) or not wanting to be a "superhero."
[/BLACKOUT]
Not to mention lots of great supporting characters like the O'Dares, and the dark and mysterious and possibly evil Shade. Plus maybe Grundy and the alien Starman Mikkal Tomas.

and look at these, these could be posters for the movies.

I really just want to see Jack and an elderly Ted Knight (the original Starman) on screen together. It would be soo cool.

yea the ted/jack knight ones sound like a good starting off point version for me to go with.

That next to last image really looks like Justin Theroux.

Honestly, I'd rather have a Starman TV show. Given Jack Knight's ambivalent attitude towards superheroics, and the rather extensive supporting cast of characters, I think the more intimate and prolonged focus of a TV show would work better for the character. Plus, both he and his main villains have powers that are pretty TV friendly.
