The Avengers Is Mark Ruffalo the Right Choice for the Hulk?

I'm not worried about Ruffalo being able to play Banner, or the Hulk for that matter. I think the hang up here I'm sensing is the look of Mark Ruffalo, whether people believe he can take on the guise of Banner. I certainly don't think Banner when I see Ruffalo, but I've tried to put this in perspective. Banner is essentially a skinny white dude with glasses and brown hair (sometimes sans glasses), and it's rather hard to be overly critical of Ruffalo without having seen him in any Marvel movie screen shots. About the only actor I've seen who looks like Banner is Guy Pierce, who looks exactly like Byrne's Banner. Other than that you have Bill Bixby, who did great, and Eric Bana who wasn't bad, and Edward Norton, who also did a good job. None of them look particularly like Banner, none of them have a history of playing scientists, and many of them had very un-Banner like roles beforehand. Ruffalo could be like Heath Ledger. Heath Ledger was doubted from day one, and look at how that turned out (I mean except for the whole 'him dying' part).

Ruffalo fills all the basics for the moment. He's white, not really muscular, and he has brown hair. Bingo-bango-jango. If he shows up looking like he did on the set of Collateral I'll be worried.

Always thought Guy Pierce would be a great Banner. I was hoping he would have been mentioned when Norton was leaving.

I have no doubt that Mark Ruffalo will be able to play the troubled scientist. Mark is smaller than Norton and Bana, but Ruffalo has always looked fuller in the face and body. If he slims down and straightens out his hair he will look fine.

He looks a little like Bixby to be honest. I wonder if that's one of the reasons why they casted him. A lot of people like the Hulk show.

Yeah I heard other people mention that as well, I also think so. Bixby with a tan.

Edward Norton is one of my favorite actors, and I think he did a very good job with Bruce Banner, so I literally have to say no lol.
I want him back :(

I think Ruffalo will do fine.

Its gotten to a point where the actors flip flop so much on the role that I dont care anymore.

I don't get the comparisons to Bixby at all.

I also don't like his attitude. But we'll see.

My only concern with Ruffalo, and this may be nitpicking, but i've never liked his voice. He comes off as really whiney. I like Norton as an actor, but thought he did a 'meh' interpretation of Banner. I kept thinking "that's Ed Norton", as opposed to truly believing he was Dr.Banner. They should have gone with an unknown actor. I thought Eric Bana did a better job than Norton, and this is coming from someone that hates the 2003 Hulk film. It was much easier for the audience to accept Bana was Banner, because he was relatively unknown. Norton was way to big of a name. In a perfect world, Sharlto Copely would have been Banner, but that ship has gone and sailed.....

I with they would have kept Norton but being what it is I really like Ruffalo as an actor and think he will make a great Banner/Hulk. Just with they had cast one of them and kept him for the whole ride. Either one would have been fine with me, I just hate major recasts.

Ruffalo's fine, it's the inconsistency that bugs me. I was looking forward to a series of interconnecting films with the same cast. :csad:

I liked Norton, Ruffalo is a pretty good actor but not my first choice. To be honest the whole Hulk in movie ideas is and should have been about the HULK. Bruce Banners screen time should be kept to a minimum as in when Tony Stark has a need for Banners genius. I would have much prefered Adrian Brody. He just has a geeky, wimpy, genius, feel about him. People tend to forget that Banner is the opposite of the Hulk.

It's funny both Norton and Brody were in my initial choices to play Hulk before the Ang Lee film was made. Brody is an excellent and fine actor and could do a fine job as Banner. Ruffalo was never in my choice and never came to mind as a choice for Banner of mine but it is an excellent choice and I do have faith that he will deliver an interesting Banner we've yet to see.

Did you see the movie The Brothers Bloom? It has both Brody and Ruffalo in it. I really enjoyed it.

I was dissapointed that they decided to recast Bruce. In my opinion Norton was the best Banner so far. It also might have helped that The Incredible Hulk in general was WAY better than the 2003 film. I think it wouldnt of been as bad to recast him if they casted Brody, though, because he definetly has the look of Dr. Banner. As of right now I don't think someone (especially not Ruffalo) can do a better job than Norton, but I guess only time (and pics and trailers) will tell.

I personally don't like Ruffalo as The Hulk. I kinda find him boring as an actor.:o

might as well.. only thing I really know him from is 13 going on 30.. so i you want to play "6 degrees", you could say that Elektra hung out with Banner in that film.. heh..

Can he be any more boring then Bana or Norton? Both of them went out of there way to lack charisma to fit the point dexter role I suppose, personally I feel that Ruffalo could bring some much needed warmth to the character.

I am not bashing Norton or Bana, and I understand some will say they were like that because that's how Banner is, yes and no, there are different interpretations to Banner, just because he needs to keep his pulse down doesn't mean he needs to lack one entirely.

Bring it on Ruffalo!

Bana's Banner bothered me for some reason, Norton was good but I felt that they over did it with the "can't get too excited thing.' I don't like bringing up the television show too much because the producer's have taken the worst of it instead of the best, but I realize that Bixby did the best job with Banner. Both Bana and Norton lacked the Bixby charm he bought to Banner.

I agree..Bixby was the best Banner so far with Norton next in line. I didn't really care for Bana much at all, although I HAD heard of him before ala Chopper, and his history as an Aussie comic. I don't think I've seen anything with Ruffalo in it, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that he is at least close to what Banner should be like.

I think he's a great actor and a good choice for this role.

The first film I saw him in was 'What Doesn't Kill You'.

I'm sure Ruffalo will have that charm. I just hope TIH counts as canon and isn't entirely forgotten, I'd like some sort of closure concerning The Leader as well.

I just recently watched Zodiac with Downy Jr. and Ruffalo, and Ruffalo was awesome in it. I have faith in him because he's an actor that takes roles that challenge his acting abilities. He does extremely well falling into character, something the superhero movies need to be looked upon as serious.

I can't see any reason why The Incredible Hulk would not be canon. Stark appeared in the movie and so did his tech. I too hope Hulk's portrayal in the Avengers movie will gain an audience and we can have another Hulk film, where the Leader's story can be resolved. Tim Blake Nelson's portrayal of Leader was promising.

Just give us an intelligent Hulk that speaks this time.
