Is PC gaming dead?

it is true that PC games just aint what they use to.

u r lame 4 saying that....

I've been hearing about the decline of PC Gaming for the last 7 - 8 years now, but you know what? There is still a very viable market for PC gaming and the manufacturers know this. PC Gaming isn't going away anytime soon.

Now that console prices keep on climbing, PC games are actually cheaper, too. I'd much rather spend the $500 I would spend on a 360 on a top-of-the-line video card for my PC, buy all my games for $10 to $20 less, and play them with even better graphical bells and whistles and a greater availability of free mods and stuff (vs. solely official releases that you have to pay for on Live).

But I'm a PC ****e. :o

Microsoft is trying to get the PC Gaming scene back to where it should be with the "Games for Windows" brand line, but it's fallen flat out of the gate with "Shadowrun" and "Halo 2".

I believe Crysis, Starcraft 2 and Spore will really help PC gaming, but it could sure use more help.

Yeah, I've seen the "Games for Windows" tags on them. Plus, they've minimized boxes to console-game size. What the PC really needs is to find a new niche. The FPS has been totally taken over by consoles. Now the only people who play them with the good ol' mouse/keyboard setup are uncompromising dinosaurs like me, who started out on Wolfenstein and Quake and will be damned if I switch to one of those girly gamepad-based shooters now.

Oh, I think the fact that it's ridiculously easy to pirate PC games is probably making a big dent in the sales, too.

I bought Vista a couple of months ago. Even though the interface looks more sleek, It's been somewhat frustrating to find that I can no longer play some of my older DOS Based Games on here. I've been trying to run X-Com Enforcer on here and everytime it try to startup I receive a dialog box "Cant run in fullscreen mode"..

So run it windowed. DOS-based games haven't run in Windows for a while, anyway. I tried installing and playing an old adventure game on XP one time, but Windows just wouldn't run it.

I don't think PC games will ever die out but it's hard not to deny that it's lost that certain charm that it used to. The adventure game genre which was my favorite in the early to mid 90's is virtually non-existent, the FPS genre is finding a lot of success on the 360, MMORPGs have flooded the market which require you to pay monthly which is a turnoff for many people, and the big anticipated releases are getting more and more spread apart so there is months that go by where nothing remotely good comes out.

Right now PC gaming has hit a low point due to the console industry and the problems I listed above, but I do believe once the PC gets a real killer app that not only defines a new genre, but also sweeps the nation like DOOM did in the early 90's, I have no doubt that we'll see a much happier time for PC gaming.

Adventure games still get released on the PC. The only problem is that the good ones also get released for consoles, the most recent of which I can think of being Dreamfall.

man thats funny bc Im finally starting to be a PC gamer now that I have a PC that can actually run games. Over the past few months Ive been playing, Swat 4, Sims 2, Half Life 2, Spider-man 3, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Oblivion, and now Halo 2 and maybe Shadowrun after next week

Everyone's always talking about how PC gaming is dead or dying, but they've been saying it for about a decade now, and it still hasn't happened. I look at PC gaming, and I see some of the biggest money makers of the decade on the PC, mostly exclusively on the PC. Show me a game as profitable as WoW on the consoles. Show me a game as advanced as Crysis on the consoles. Explain why there are more people using Steam (13 million) than there are using the Xbox360 (11.6 million). Why would it die?

Crysis, WoW, Starcraft, even Diablo 2 among countless others....no, PC gaming will never die.

As sad as it would make me to see PC gaming die altogether, the prospect of PC gaming living on solely through MMORPGs saddens me even more. :(

Hopefully, Crysis and Starcraft 2 and the other games coming out for PC in the next few years will renew enough interest to keep either from happening.

I agree. MMORPGs can collectively kiss my ass, all at the same time. I don't see why EVERY developer wants to make one, simply because WoW is doing so well. Why not grab a more open market like adventure games?

I really miss adventure games. Game developers should all gather 'round a cozy fire and hear ideas from Ragnar Tornquist, David Cage, and maybe Crystal Dynamics about how to mix platforming, puzzles, button sequence mini-games, mystery, and incredible stories together to return the adventure genre to its former glory.

I don't think PC gaming will ever die with great RPG's that you can only find on there!

The only MMO I play is Stormreach.
Sadly the following drama fest came to my attention recently.
From USA Today
RENO (AP) — A couple authorities say were so obsessed with the Internet and video games that they left their babies starving and suffering other health problems have pleaded guilty to child neglect.
The children of Michael and Iana Straw, a boy age 22 months and a girl age 11 months, were severely malnourished and near death last month when doctors saw them after social workers took them to a hospital, authorities said. Both children are doing well and gaining weight in foster care, prosecutor Kelli Ann Viloria told the Reno Gazette-Journal.

Michael Straw, 25, and Iana Straw, 23, pleaded guilty Friday to two counts each of child neglect. Each faces a maximum 12-year prison sentence.

Viloria said the Reno couple were too distracted by online video games, mainly the fantasy role-playing "Dungeons & Dragons" series, to give their children proper care.

"They had food; they just chose not to give it to their kids because they were too busy playing video games," Viloria told the Reno Gazette-Journal.

Police said hospital staff had to shave the head of the girl because her hair was matted with cat urine. The 10-pound girl also had a mouth infection, dry skin and severe dehydration.

Her brother had to be treated for starvation and a genital infection. His lack of muscle development caused him difficulty in walking, investigators said.

The Straws have been given public defenders. Jeremy Bosler, head of the county public defender's office, declined to comment to The Associated Press on Saturday.

Michael Straw is an unemployed cashier, and his wife worked for a temporary staffing agency doing warehouse work, according to court records. He received a $50,000 inheritance that he spent on computer equipment and a large plasma television, authorities said.

While child abuse because of drug addiction is common, abuse rooted in video game addiction is rare, Viloria said.

Last month, experts at an American Medical Association meeting backed away from a proposal to designate video game addiction as a mental disorder, saying it had to be studied further. Some said the issue is like alcoholism, while others said there was no concrete evidence it's a psychological disease.

Patrick Killen, spokesman for Nevada Child Abuse Prevention, said video game addiction's correlation to child abuse is "a new spin on an old problem."

"As we become more technologically advanced, there's more distractions," Killen said. "It's easy for someone to get addicted to something and neglect their children. Whether it's video games or meth, it's a serious issue, and (we) need to become more aware of it."

EdRyder: It's sad, but that has more to do with the parents being horrible parents than with video games.
