Is popular music today better than it was 10 years ago?

R & B is ALL ABOUT catchy hooks now rather than lyrics of substance.

I don't know if the lyrics were ever all that substantial, they definitely were better written though. Plus the singers could y'know...actually sing.

The older you get the worse popular music gets to you because it's not made for you.

I still listen to TLC when I get a minute.

Yep. Hating today's music is no different from when your parents or grandparents hated the music you grew up on.

You know your grandparents' parents were all, "why ya'll playing that filthy Cab Calloway with those raunchy lyrics of his?"

Minaj is a very clever lyricist, I will give her that.

Any chance Nicki Minaj had of gaining my respect for her lyrics died when I heard her verse on "Bottoms Up." She rhymes the phrase "keys to the Benz" with itself. She pads out her lines by saying the same words 3 or 4 times. She makes a completely random Anna Nicole Smith reference in the middle of her verse about clubbing for no particular reason.

"Moment in Life" didn't help any, as she proceeded to throw out random unrelated phrases that happened to rhyme. Oh, you sprinkle holy water upon the vampire, do you? I'm not sure what that has to do with you getting what you desire in your empire while calling the shots like an umpire, but thanks for letting me know.

And then there's "Super Bass." "You're like slicker than a guy with a thing on his eye." Did you forget the word "patch" Nicki? I'm assuming that's a Slick Rick reference you made. The thing on his eye is called a "patch."

I like Minaj's voice, and she is very pretty when she isn't dressed like a crazy clown.

Eh, depends on the individual. There was plenty of music that was popular when I was a teen that I knew sucked. The afore mentioned TLC, for example. Chicks couldn't sing for @#$%. I just liked looking at them, never bought their albums.

Or making those stupid faces.

As far and R&B goes, I've always had more of a liking towards british R&B.

That's not true for everyone. I was born in the 1980s and the music I love the most was made in the 60s. Then, I love music made in the 70s and 50s. Everyone is introduced to the music they are born into, but if they explore all music they can find they can find their true favorites. I am even now getting into classical music from the 1800s.

Feh! I prefer Baroque music over all that new fangled Classical mess. :o

TLC is one of the best R&B bands of all time. Those girls could sing. Also Minaj can rap hard when she wants too.

I'm not a big R&B fan but TLC was one of the much better acts.

The only way you know if the popular music of today will last is like 15 to 20 years down the road. I was watching the One Hit Wonders of the 90's on VH1 last night and all those songs I remember when they first came out and some of them still get played to this day on certain radio stations. For instance...Jump Around by House of Pain.

Ice Ice Baby is still in the lexicon for some reason. And the funny thing is that Vanilla Ice nowadays hates that it is.

HA! Seriously? Oh come on, he's got to be full of crap. Maybe he's tired of getting the same crap for it but I'm sure he's not tired of getting those checks for the sales of the song.

T-Boz wasn't a very good singer, but her singing style worked for their songs. TLC was no En Vogue in terms of vocal skills, but each member knew how to play to her strengths.

True,I agree with that.T-Boz worked well on Creep,Unpretty, and Red Light Special.I'm not really feeling her on Waterfalls though.

Never really been a fan of top 40. I usually find the music I listen to on Rate Your Music. Look up any genre i'm interested at the moment from any time period then download.

Difference is, most of the people hating on todays music are young. All the people I've seen complaining about pop music and how rock is so much better are all teenagers. Adults these days try to give everything a chance. My father tried to give Justin Bieber a chance for gods sakes.

If a quarter of todays generation can't stand the music that was made for their generation, you know somethings ****ed up.

My favorite bands/albums/music came out a little over 10 years ago. (Power Man 5000, Static-X, Disturbed, Korn, System of a Down, Linkin Park, etc.) All those bands had pretty amazing CD's out in 1999-2001 that were popular. I dug the techno/groove "nu metal" sound that was going on at the time. I'm not a big fan of most of the rock bands out today. Their's a few I really like, but it's just not for me. I'll stick with the older stuff anyday.

Oh yeah! It's so refreshing to hear another person rant about Nicki Minaj, whose voice is currently my choice for Most Annoying Sound in the World. Actually, her singing is okay, but when she starts rapping I want to put a bullet in my brain. The beginning of "Moment for Life" is particularly bad; I can't take it when she gets on about the "vampire/empire/umpire" bit, and the fact that, as you pointed out, the lyrics don't really make much sense just makes it worse. I absolutely hate her.

That said, she is smoking hot. But isn't that always the case with crappy female pop stars?

GREAT comment, because I too have noticed this trend. During the last decade, I always knew a large subset of younger people in my demographic who tended to prefer older music. Especially in university, it seemed every dorm room was populated by students with t-shirts and posters of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles and Bob Marley. I don't think this has ever occurred previously during the 20th century. During the 60s, how many kids were going around saying "modern music sucks, you guys have got to get into the classic **** like Bing Crosby"?
