I'm not trying to start a ruckus, honestly. I just thought I'd pose this question, because I personally think he's extremely overrated.
First, I present to you his filmography:
Prometheus (2012) (filming)
Robin Hood (2010)
Body of Lies (2008)
American Gangster (2007)
A Good Year (2006)
Kingdom of Heaven (2005)
Matchstick Men (2003)
Black Hawk Down (2001)
Hannibal (2001)
Gladiator (2000)
G.I. Jane (1997)
White Squall (1996)
1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992)
Thelma & Louise (1991)
Black Rain (1989)
Someone to Watch Over Me (1987)
Legend (1985)
Blade Runner (1982)
Alien (1979)
The Duellists (1977)
Now, I think his greatest achievements in directing are what I have in bold: Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, and Black Hawk Down. Unquestionably, these are masterpieces, and most directors don't have the confidence of saying they've made one great movie, let alone four.
However, he's made 19 films altogether. 4:19 isn't a good ratio. Granted, the other 15 movies aren't terrible, but I think we can all agree that G.I. Jane, Body of Lies, Robin Hood, Black Rain, American Gangster, and A Good Year aren't exactly great, either.
Here's my basic opinion on Ridley Scott: Aside from 4 of his movies, every movie I've ever seen of his just gives me an indifferent, "Eh" feeling. They're not amazing, they're not terrible, they're just.... there. My immediate reaction when one of his movies ends is "Okay. Whatever. What's for dinner tonight, honey?"
- He doesn't seem to put any passion into his directing at all.
- Most of the movies he agrees to direct seem like he's just behind the camera, going through the motions, collecting a paycheck.
- He seems like he has no balls. He doesn't seem to want to make anything ambitious or bold, or audacious. Alien and Blade Runner are the exceptions... but those were back-to-back-films, and they were 30 years ago. He seems like a total Company Man.
- His directing is completely mechanical and robotic. There's no STYLE. There hasn't been any style with him in three decades. There's nothing interesting going on in his stories, and the scripts he agrees to direct are incredibly bland and the complete opposite of fascinating.
Am I crazy? Or is Ridley Scott just mediocre 80% of the time?
