Exhibit A: Ultimate Spider-Man is cancelled.
Exhibit B: Greg Weisman just left Star Wars Rebels for unknown reasons.
Exhibit C: Sony has been talking to Marvel Studios about ways to revive interest in Spider-Man.
The Spectacular Spider-Man is widely regarded as the best Spider-Man cartoon series and even one of the best cartoons of all time. So why was it cancelled? Bad timing mostly! After the second season, Marvel got the rights to televise Spider-Man, while Sony kept the rights to the stories and character designs created specifically for The Spectacular Spider-Man. Therefore, neither Sony nor Marvel had all the rights necessary to continue the show.
Since it's cancellation, the show has gained a cult following who would definitely tune in again if the show was revived. Could this be one method to revive Spider-Man that Sony is considering? It would be fairly easy for Sony. They would just need to relinquish the rights to the materials for the show to Marvel.
For what it's worth, the show consistently had the highest rating for it's time slot and Sony has not shunned or attempted to bury it since cancellation (the complete series was released on Blu-Ray just a few months ago), but they can't be profiting that much from Blu-Ray sales alone. On the other hand, Ultimate Spider-Man is cancelled. So is that Marvel giving up on one of their most popular characters OR could it be that they're just about to replace it with a better show?
Exhibit D: The cast and crew of The Spectacular Spider-Man recently reunited to talk about how much they enjoyed working on the show and indicating that they'd "leap at the chance" to continue.
