It Follows

Hoping to see it tomorrow. Buzz has been ridiculous for it.

Ridiculous is indeed the word. The film is above average but that is only because the average horror film is so, so bad.

The movie is good. It is a slow burn type of horror film. I will say that personally, the scary peaks in the middle but it is still good until the ending. I didn't know what the f*** [blackout]the pool was all about.[/blackout] The soundtrack is freaking awesome, though. I would listen to it casually. Overall, not too scary but solid film. That Lerch looking motherf***er was scary.

On a side note, I thought it was cool that the film is an [blackout]allegory to AIDS.[/blackout] Paul was ready to take it anyway he could.

:o

Saw it today and here's some of my ramblings:

Probably one of the best horror movies in recent years. It's very much a horror movie that came right out of the late 70s/80s. While the movie is influenced by John Carpenter, it does a few things that set itself apart. The actual entity itself is very well put together and disturbing. It's the closest thing we'll get to a Slender Man movie. It also got layers to it, it's got something to say about sex, STDs, and rape. Also, It's always refreshing to see a young cast that you don't find obnoxious. With The Guest and now It Follows, I think we have a new Scream Queen with Maika Monroe. She was simply incredible. I will have to nitpick though, there's moments with the 3rd act that I thought could of been better executed. Overall though, it's definitely a can't miss for horror fans or movie fans in general.
9/10

I been hearing all kinds of hype about this movie. A friend of mine saw it and said it stuck with him for a few days! I am not the type of person that gets scared at horror movies. There are only TWO recent horror movies that I can think of that kinda creeped me out. The Grudge movie starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Paranormal Activity 3. There rest of these horror movies now a days are just lame jump scares and nothing more. So I might check this out just to see if its intense as people say.

Yeah this doesn't rely on jump scares, it's knows how to create paranoia.

Should I wait for the sequel? IT FOLLOWS AGAIN.

Or for the prequel? BEFORE IT FOLLOWS

Or the reboot? NOW IT FOLLOWS

Curse you Hollywood and your ability to ruin good things.

There probably will be a Halloween scare zone at Universal Studio's Theme Parks during their big Halloween Fright Nights events based on this movie.

I don't know how many have seen the remake for Maniac, but the opening to that reminded me of the opening to this movie.

This was definitely a sphincter tightening flick. Very paranoid, very tense. That score was amazing too.

Just got back from seeing it.
The reaction this movie has gotten is a little confusing.
It Follows is okay. Very very okay. It has a strong premise...and not much more.
The movie starts off strong. It establishes its set up very well and then becomes quite repetitive.
The premise could have been used as a starting point to explore a number of different ideas but it doesn't really do much in that regard.
The film has a pretty good cast and establishes the relationships between the characters fairly well...but fails to do much with them.
The whole film just feels like the first act of a much better movie. I'm not sure where all the love is coming from.
It Follows is passable. 6/10

Excellent post. I completely agree, but I gave it a 1/10 because I was simply overhyped by the Internet (again). It angered me how mediocre it was. I expected a game changer and I simply didn't get it.

I also don't get the allegory for STD's. I didn't get that impression at all.

My interpretation: These are teenagers who are otherwise supposed to be innocent and pure and virgin (a classic horror trope), but they commit sins, and as a result, their personal demons are following them. They're being followed by the skeletons in their closets. They're being judged by their sins. They're being reminded by what they did. The "ghosts" are like bad memories constantly reminding them, so they think they can wash the bad memory away by doing it again and making it the norm.

The personal demons themselves are distinct/unique to the individual being haunted, and they manifest themselves as deceased relatives, friends, and loved ones who are back to judge them. One example is that the ghost in the swimming pool is seen in a framed photograph towards the end, showing that he was somebody's father.

^ I love that concept (if that's indeed what it was), but I thought it was executed poorly. :csad:

Another independent movie like this that kind of follows the same tropes and concept (sort of) is Contracted (2013). That movie does not disappoint.

I wonder how Rocketman feels about horror in general. I remember how he basically hated the Evil Within.

You can say that the movie was an allegory for STD's, but this review thought that the movie was also an allegory for how teenagers can be alone when dealing with sex and becoming an adult.
More interestingly, Mitchell's riffs on sex and adulthood are refreshing in their allegorical complexity. The specter that relentlessly follows those who have been cursed is more than just a physical manifestation of the old sex ed mantra “every time you sleep with someone, you also sleep with everyone in his or her past.” Here, intercourse can simultaneously damn you and save you. But either way, you're on your own. Parents — almost entirely absent from the film — can offer no meaningful guidance or help, further driving home the alienation and self-obsession teens experience as they struggle with adulthood.
'It Follows' gives the horror genre a much-needed jolt

I'm seeing this tonight. Looking forward to it.

This is a good slow burn psychological horror movie. While it probably has been over hyped, the premise is good and the acting is surprisingly solid considering I don't recognize a single actor in the movie from anything else.

I did think it was clever that...

near the end Paul apparently gets the idea to "pass it on" to a prostitute. This makes absolute perfect sense, she is almost certain to pass it on the same day and even if the person she passes it on to is killed and it reverts back to her she is likely to pass it on immediately, and so on and so on. She might never even know she is "cursed" because she will be passing it on before anything happens to her.

Saw this. It was indeed worthy of its success. It's not the scariest film I've ever seen, but that's ok. This is a very smart horror film that is very well directed. I loved the simplicity, the Carpentor-esque way about it but still is its own thing. There was just the genuine slow burn of tension and dread that you don't see anymore. The mere expectation of something that's coming around the corner, or in this case, behind you. It takes some of those classic horror tropes and makes them an actual part of the story. The mystery of where it originates from, the mystery surrounding how to beat it, all really add to the dread.

It's really a unique situation. The ending was very fitting. This is actually something I'd like to see a sequel to. Because it would be very interesting to see where it could go next and in which direction.

While I have issues with the movie there is one scene in particular I thought was masterfully done.

The characters drive out to the neighbor boy's lakehouse/cabin. 4 of them are lounging around in lawn chairs while the girl with glasses is walking in the background. Then the camera pans over to the water and you see the girl with the glasses float by on an raft. That was a very good oh-S*** moment.

Yeah, that right there was my favorite part of the film. It was masterfully crafted and effective. I wish horror did this more often. It reminded me of The Strangers when one of the strangers was standing in the background while Liv Tyler was in the kitchen.
