It's Nice To See Racism In America Is Alive And Well!

I remember reading an almost identical story to this a few years back so no this doesnt surprise me. Its been one of those weeks huh, the woman on the tram, the video responses and now this.

Like some others have said they should just go to another church and let that be the end of it. Obviously the one they are going to don't follow the bible all that well.

I'm glad to see that people arent hating on churches in general. This is not what christians believe nor does the Bible teach it. This is just 9 people being racist.

I've been to several bible baptist churches that do believe this and use scripture to back them. If you walk in married to someone of another race they accept you ( assuming divorce is a worse action). Also they are a bit more accepting if the other person is also "saved" , that could mean it's 'god's will'. So when I read this it didn't even surprise me , sad to say.
I'm not trying to label all Christians. I'm just saying I've encountered a few of the ones that are like this.

The reason I put America in the title, was because that's where this incident occurred. I wasn't trying to say racism didn't exist anywhere else, and I don't know how you guys came to that conclusion. I posted this, mainly because, it seemed like a throwback of sorts, to a day in this country, where anyone who wasn't white, was treated like a lesser person. That and the fact that the former pastor said he made the recommendation to promote unity, buy excluding an interracial couple.

I figured as much

Bob Marley, Prince, and President Obama are all interracial.

I doubt anyone from this church will be as accomplished, loved or influential as any of them.

Yup. One of my favorite Marley quotes of all time:

Bob Marley said:
Me don't dip on nobody's side. Me don't dip on the black man's side nor the white man's side. Me dip on God's side, the one who create me and cause me to come from black and white.

Who needs church anyway when you have the golden rule?

Not sure if you're making a subtle joke here (hope you are), but in case not, I'd like to point out that the Bible tells us to follow the Golden Rule (do unto others as you would have them do unto you) but it also gives us the rule that we need to go to church (Hebrews 10:25).
As a pastor, hearing people call themselves Christians and then hear them try to justify not needing to go to church is very disturbing. The Bible makes it clear that if you're a Christian you need to be going to church, otherwise you are disobeying God. Rant over :)

In regards to the church in the article, I'll point out that just because it says 40 members, doesn't mean that many people were actually there for the vote. I'd guess the number was actually significantly lower based on my church experiences. Clearly this is a very very small group that was led by an ignorant few. Hopefully they repent and correct this in the near future, though that obviously won't undo the damage.

What does the bible teach that is so important that the golden rule doesn't?

Dude, seriously people are naive if they think racism has ever gone away. Regardless of your ethnicity, even if you're Caucasian, you'll be the victim of racism.

How about my favorite biblical rule of judge not lest ye be judged accordingly? In laymen's terms it means don't be a *****ebag to other people because you're no better than they are. Simple Christian values can go a long way if you really comprehend what they're trying to say.

Isn't ”don't judge others if you don't want to be judged” basically a version of the golden rule?

The church had 40 members but only 15 voted. The rest were either not there or abstained. The group of churches that this one church belongs to have now overturned that vote as not only being morally wrong but that it was not conducted the way their bylaws state a vote needs to be done and counted.

The title to this thread is infuriatingly overdramatic. It's a 40 person church in butt**** Kentucky for christ's sake. It's incredibly ignorant to make a sweeping generalization of an entire country of over 311 million people based on a group of 40 people. Racism is an idea that exists everywhere on earth and will always exist to some extent as long as people have free will. Grow the frick up Hotwire.

The title doesn't say "America is racist;" it's merely pointing out the fact that there is still racism in existance in America, which is where this incident took place. Which is true

Not to mention the fact that Spider-X is complaining that the thread starter is making wild sweeping generalizations about a country as Spider-X makes the same thing about the people in the state of Kentucky.......ironic isn't it.

What does the bible teach that is so important that the golden rule doesn't?

The 'golden rule' is actually what Jesus said was the second most important commandment. Jesus said the most important commandment is to "Love the Lord your God with all your heart with all your soul and with all your mind".

Jesus gave what we now call the golden rule as a summary, but the rest of the Bible gives many more particulars to that. The Bible is a guidebook for every aspect of life. Any major life decision made there are principles in the Bible that can help guide you in that decision.

It is extremely valuable in its entirety and there are many many people who have studied it their whole lives and would state that they never ran out of new things to learn from it.

It's no surprise...Racism is still strong in America...and not just in the south. It's just been coated over with a nice pretty blanket...molding underneath.

That's the thing about racists. They exist in every form possible, and will use whatever tools they can to justify it. In my mind, any racist who uses religion to justify their racism is only into said religion because it is an "authority", and they feel its the best and easiest way to justify their opinion. And that mindset isn't limited to just racists.

One of the largest churches in my area is led by a black preacher and his white wife.

That's true. Me (white), my wife (hispanic), and our oldest daughter (black), encountered the most racism while living in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. That's just outside Akron if you don't know. When we lived in Houston, TX, none. El Paso, TX, none. Marietta, GA, none. Being from an area where it was all white, I'd never experienced anything like that.

So you're saying members of that church will have a bigger impact on the world than Bob Marley's music or Obama's policies?

No, but I laughed at your choices. A druggie musician and a politician who is now considered to be a worse President than Jimmy Carter was. That's why I laughed.

Yes. 'Do unto others..." is also considered the "golden rule". The reason being that when Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was, he gave two:

Love God with all your heart
Love your neighbor as you love yourself

Though, once could say that when he was asked what the greatest commandment was, he was saying the greatest commandment was to "love."

Druggie musician? You mean like the Beatles? lol!

and Obama did pretty good considering what Bush handed to him. I don't think he's a worse president than Jimmy Carter, Bush Jr, or Bush Sr. Of corse right-wingers are trying to paint him as a horrible president, they did the same with Clinton.

Bob Marley was considered the 3rd greatest lyricist of ALL TIME by the BBC.

Not bad for a druggie.

From what I've seen....most musicians throughout history have used one thing or another, be it whiskey or weed or whatever, during their careers.
